Richard “Dick” Hanley passed away on May 11, 2022. He went to a better place in the arms of the angels while we mourned his passing. Dick was born on February 19, 1936 to Jane Hunter Hanley and Myron “Mike” Hanley. He grew up in Evanston, Illinois with his sister Lee Hanley Westerberg and his brother, Michael (Kathryn). He married Judy Loftus, and they moved to Wilmette, Illinois with their son, Ryan (Madeline) in a home Dick designed and built incorporating his love for nature by using natural wood and solar energy. His extraordinary and innovative craftsmanship also extended to building a summer home in Northern Wisconsin, and many other remodeling projects. Dick loved the outdoors especially the North Woods and Lake Superior where he spent many summers with his family and his dogs. In August of 2020, Dick was able to attend the wedding of Ryan and Madeline. This past year he had the joy of welcoming his first grandchild, Charlotte Jane Hanley (named for his grandmother and mother) into the world. Dick was an outstanding athlete possessing strength, skill, and determination that he channeled into his love for swimming. Beginning at Evanston High School and then at the University of Michigan, Dick was an elite swimmer winning numerous medals, state championships, and awards. He won a silver medal at the Melbourne Olympics in 1956, and then set a World Record in the 200 meter freestyle in 1957. After college, he continued swimming and competing in Masters Swim with Evanston Masters. He carried his love for swimming into the classroom and beyond. He was a professor and a swimming coach at the Chicago City Colleges where he shared his passion for swimming and fostered, if not a love for swimming, an awareness and knowledge of the rules of water safety. His desire to help others to be comfortable and safe in the water motivated him to publish articles and to share his extensive knowledge and experience. Dick will be missed by many friends and family especially Lindsay, Jenny, Gretchen, Casey, and Connor Hanley, Scott and Stephen Westerberg, all the Hunters, Loftuses, and extended family who knew and loved him for the unique individual he was.
