THE MEASURE OF A MAN

Author: Anonymous

Not - How did he die? But - How did he live?

Not - What did he gain? But - What did he give?

These are the things that measure the worth

Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.

Not - What was his station? But - had he a heart?

And - How did he play his God-given part?

Was he ever ready with a word of good cheer?

To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?

Not - What was his church? Not - What was his creed?

But - Had he befriended those really in need?

Not - What did the sketch in the newspaper say?

But - How many were sorry when he passed away?

These are the things that measure the worth

Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.

This obituary could start out like many others listing David’s accomplishments, facts about his life, but that would be ordinary and David was anything but ordinary.

David was often underestimated, but most had no idea who they were talking to when they first would meet him.

His close friend and long-time business partner, Mike Feeley used to say ““Pierce you are a complicated man, with complicated problems” Mike was right, David was “complicated”  Not from the standpoint of being difficult or hard to figure out, but from the standpoint of being incredibly multi-faceted; a deep person with many layers.

David majored in Chemistry in college, could tell you where any element was on the Periodic table and the chemical makeup of almost anything down to the number of atoms of each element. He was the person you always wanted on your team if you were playing any kind of trivia. He was brilliant at anything he decided to do…except sing he wasn’t great at that but whatever he lacked in singing ability, he made up for with volume and enthusiasm. One of his favorite things to do was to make up dirty limericks to existing songs…most of which are probably not appropriate to repeat here, but generally involved reproductive organs…you get the picture.

He was incredibly romantic, thoughtful and absolutely hilarious. He kept me laughing ALL the time with his jokes and antics…life was never boring around our house ♥

David proudly served his country in the United States Army as an Aviation Operation Specialist and was a Desert Storm combat veteran . His military medals and ribbons included a National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, Marksmanship Medal, Parachute Badge, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Air Medal and an Army Commendation Medal.

He could speak Romanian, German, Italian and Spanish. He also wrote poetry, was an exceptional photographer, was well-read and fond of leather-bound editions of the classics.

David and his dad had had a car racing team in their younger years.  Under the expert guidance of his dad, David became a first-rate mechanic.  He used to refer to himself as a “fixer” and he was David could fix anything and his technical/mechanical aptitudes spilled over into the technology field. He co-founded ProComm Total Office Technologies with his business partner and long- time friend, Mike Feeley. They worked diligently to build a thriving company not only with expert technical capabilities, but with integrity, something of which I know they both were very proud.

David was a dedicated member of the Wingmen Motorcycle Club.  He loved his Harley and often would tell me he needed some “wind therapy”. Riding his bike with the wind on his face was how he cleared his mind and eased his soul. His club brothers were next to his heart and he loved them all especially Rob “Kodiak” Aikland.  David was Kodiak’s “mini-me”. Kodiak and Mike Feeley are the brothers David wasn’t born with.

Those of you who had the honor of knowing my husband can think back over the time you have known him and remember the countless times he offered a helping hand, patient assistance with a problem, brightened your day with a smile or a joke.  David was truly selfless.

As his wife of 20 years, I saw him at his best and his worst and I can tell you David was amazing. The depth of his love for his friends and family knew no limits, his sense of humor was boundless, his loyalty to his country was worth any price he had to pay.

David’s Mom, Glenda Floyd Pierce was already on the other side to welcome David when he crossed over, but he leaves behind many broken hearts.  His Dad, Ernie Pierce, his sister and brother-in-law Sherry and Mark Pollard, his two precious nieces Brooke and Addison, many uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and clients, his “babies” Madison, Molly, Tiffany, J’marcus, Oscar, Leo, Annabelle and me, his wife…our lives are forever altered by his loss.

The true measure of a man is not what he accumulates materially but the number of lives he touches along his life’s journey. David’s journey on this earth was far too short, but the lives he touched were too many to number. The best way to keep him alive is to remember those times and keep his smile forever in our hearts.

We all love you, David.
