Elmer & Julie (Reckers) Schweitzer Obituary

Elmer Werner Schweitzer was born on October 6, 1938 in Ellsworth, MN. Elmer was raised on the family farm which is registered as a centennial farm. Elmer’s sense of humor, love of learning, and adventure were apparent even as a boy. Julie and Elmer met at St. Adrian. Julie always said it was love at first sight. They were high school sweethearts and attended prom. She went on to Nurses Training at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Rochester, Minnesota, completing her studies in 1958. Julie and Elmer were married on June 25, 1960 at St. Adrian Catholic Church in Adrian, MN in a celebration that included many friends and family. In the following years, Elmer enlisted and served in the U.S. Army including a deployment to Korea and afterward an assignment at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. When Elmer completed his time with the Army, he enrolled as a student at the University of Minnesota, and they settled in the Twin Cities. Julie was a nurse at the University of Minnesota Hospital where she worked in pediatrics. In 1965, Julie and Elmer welcomed Barb into their family. Elmer graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering in 1967 and accepted a job with Ford, in Sandusky, Ohio. Julie, Elmer, and Barb welcomed Steven and then Scott into the family. Elmer earned his MBA from Bowling Green State University, Ohio in 1972. The family relocated to Michigan in 1976 where Elmer accepted a new position with Ford and made their home in Rochester Hills. In 1979, the family welcomed Kari, and soon after, Julie began to share her love of music by teaching piano lessons out of their home in what the family affectionately called “the music room.” Julie taught piano for 25 years in the family home and also taught at the American Music Academy in downtown Rochester. Elmer moved on from Ford to work as a consultant with firms in Asia and Europe. In 2002, Julie and Elmer purchased their first home in Sun City West, AZ and spent the next several years as snowbirds. The family enjoyed spending time together at their Rochester Hills home each Christmas season and during the summer. Julie and Elmer delighted in becoming grandparents to Kate, Ben, Tommy, Lyla, and Ryan. They were thankful for the family they had made as well as the addition of their in-laws. In 2010, the whole family helped to celebrate Julie and Elmer’s 50th anniversary with a trip to Charlevoix, MI. They were very proud of their long marriage, and always provided a wonderful example.
