David Lance Bowles, M.D., passed away on Sunday, May 15, 2022, after a prolonged illness. He was surrounded by his wife and three daughters.

David was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on June 29, 1951, to Norma and William R. Bowles. He grew up in Bartlesville, OK, graduating from Sooner High School in 1969. David attended Oklahoma State University, graduating with a B.S., then attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, obtaining his M.D. degree in 1977. He did a General Surgery internship at Methodist Hospital of Dallas.

David married Cecilia Troegel of Houston during his internship in 1978. He then did four years of Orthopedic surgery residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, TX. He was confirmed into the Catholic faith during his residency. David entered private practice in Athens, TX as a solo practitioner in June 1982, building his practice from scratch as the only orthopedic surgeon in the county. He and Cecilia were blessed with the first of three wonderful daughters in April of 1983 when Courtney was born, followed by Madeline in July 1986 and Rebecca in October 1996. All three attended Bishop T.K. Gorman Catholic High School in Tyler, as he and Cecilia actively participated in their education and activities. They bought property on Richland Chambers Reservoir in 1996 and built a metal barn, eventually remodeling it into the place of their dreams upon the somewhat rapid arrival of nine grandchildren. He retired from practice in November 2013 to pursue his various hobbies and spend more time with his beloved wife.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Cecilia (Troegel) Bowles, his daughters, Courtney Powell and husband Matthew, of Arlington, TX, Madeline Blalock and husband Darryl, of Beaumont, TX, and Rebecca Bowles of Bryan, TX. Grandchildren include Liam and Wyatt Powell, and Caleb, Jonah, Priscilla, Olivia, Mary, Lucy, and Genevieve Blalock. He is also survived by two brothers, Michael Bowles of California and Scott M. Bowles and wife Suzy of Ft. Worth, TX.

Honorary pallbearers are friends from David’s youth: Charlie Roskamp and Dennis Peterson of Tulsa, OK, Doug Davis of Comfort, TX, Terry Glasgow of Houston, TX and Roger Teat of Cherry Log, GA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Priests for Tomorrow Seminarian Endowment, c/o St. Edwards Catholic Church, 800 East Tyler St., Athens, TX 75751.
