Vilda R. Jones Obituary

Vilda Arlene Reckard was born July 3, 1924 near Osage, IA to W. C. Reckard and Persis (Weaver) Reckard. The next year they moved to a farm near Austin, MN and in 1930 to a farm near Nora Springs, IA. Vilda attended a one-room school thru 8th grade then graduated in 1941 from the high school at Rockford, IA. In 1943, she began a 10-month course at Pitze's School of Beauty Culture in Waterloo and then worked for three years at Pitze's Permanent Wave Shop. In 1948, she moved to Minneapolis to attend Minnesota Bible College, where she took Christian Education and Secretarial courses for two years. In 1950, while attending classes in the morning, she began fulltime work at Honeywell, a manufacturer of thermostats, remaining there until she married Walter V. Jones on May 31, 1952 at the Church of Christ in Mason City, IA.

The newlyweds went immediately to Walter's native Washington state, where together they ministered to congregations in the Puget Sound country. Vilda taught Sunday School there as well as after they returned to the Midwest in 1960 and settled in Des Moines the next year. Vilda was a Cub Scout, Blue Birds, and Camp Fire leader and enjoyed sewing, crafts, making apple pies, gardening, and especially her family and friends.

Vilda worked part-time at Sears and American Republic Insurance before going to work fulltime for the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, where she did printing and mailing and retired in 1990 after 22 years. Along with her husband she was a caregiver for 40 years for their daughter, Connie, who had muscular dystrophy. Vilda was a member of the Rising Sun Church of Christ.

Vilda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; her sisters, Bernice Lewke, Darlene Baker and Betty DeVries; her foster brother, Clifford Huntley; and daughter, Connie. She is survived her son, Greg (Kris); grandson, Spencer (Alicia) Jones; great grandson; Liam Jones and great granddaughter, Cora Jones, all of Des Moines; She is also survived by, granddaughter, Meredith Jones of Burbank, CA; granddaughter, Victoria Jones and great granddaughter, Hazel Bradley both of Des Moines; as well as nieces, nephews and their families.

Vilda passed away, May 14, 2022 at Rock Creek Assisted Living in Ankeny. Funeral services will be held at Rising Sun Church of Christ, 6390 NE Rising Sun Drive, Pleasant Hill, at 11am, Tuesday, May 24, 2022, with visitation beginning at 10am. Burial will be beside her daughter and husband at the Memorial Park Cemetery west of Mason City.
