Marie Manning Obituary

Marie Manning, 85, of Bloomfield, beloved wife of the late Walter Manning, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 14, 2022, surrounded by her family at her home. Born in Luverne, AL on June 28, 1936, daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Fleeting) Dickson, she was raised in Alabama before moving to South Windsor with her family as a young girl. After marrying her husband, Marie moved to Hartford where she raised her daughter and lived for most of her life before moving to Bloomfield four years ago. Marie loved fashion and as a young woman worked at Brown-Thompson’s Department Store in Downtown Hartford. She loved working with customers and seeing all the latest fashions. Her passion for helping others led her to take a position at St. Mary’s Home in West Hartford as a nurse’s aide. Marie loved her work and took classes to further her education and ultimately became a rehabilitation nurse. Marie retired in 2003 after over 35 years of service. In her spare time, she enjoyed completing word searches, crossword puzzles and crocheting. A longtime member of The First Cathedral in Bloomfield, Marie also served as an usher for many years. Most of all, Marie will be remembered as the consummate mother and grandmother. She loved spending time with her family especially her grandchildren and was always looking for ways to help others. She leaves to mourn her passing, a daughter, Mary C. Hartfield and her husband Malcolm Powell of Bloomfield; four grandchildren, Phylicia Hartfield-Mickens and her husband Carl of Reseda, CA, Nycole Hartfield of New York, NY, Joshua Crawford of Bloomfield, and Xavier Powell of Somers; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Davis of Bloomfield. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by four sisters, Elizabeth Guthrie, Eula Mae Lewis, Annie Ruth Davis, and Ethel Childs; a brother, Robert Dickson; and a brother-in-law, Joshua Guthrie. Her family will receive friends on Monday, May 23, 10-11 a.m., followed by a Homegoing Service at 11 a.m., at The First Cathedral, 1151 Blue Hills Ave., Bloomfield. Burial will follow in Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield.
