Gardner-Robert A. Cohen, 92, passed away peacefully at Leominster Hospital on Friday, May 13, 2022. He is survived by his beloved wife of 72 years, Bernadette (Comeau) Cohen; their children and spouses, Paula J. Botch, wife of the late Johnny M. Botch, of Orange; Gina M. DeSimone-Taylor & Brian of Bryson City, NC; Mark A. Cohen & Jennifer of Hudson, NH; Rachel A. Taylor & Rick of Leominster; and Christine E. Smith of Fitchburg; 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and many dear friends.
Robert was born in Lynn, son of the late Israel & Edith (Labrie) Cohen. Following graduation from Rindge Technical School, Class of 1947, Bob enlisted to serve our country in the United States Navy. He embarked on a prestigious twenty-year military career specializing in Journalism, Public Affairs and Broadcasting before ultimately retiring as a Journalism Chief Petty Officer. Mr. Cohen then enjoyed his civilian career as Editor-in-Chief of Proceedings at the Naval Institute at Annapolis and later continued working in media, broadcasting, and public affairs until ultimately retiring. A devout Catholic and man of great faith, Bob proudly committed to living the Gospel following the example of St. Francis of Assisi, as a member of the Professed Secular Franciscan Order. Actively involved in his faith and civic communities, he was a member of Saint Benedict Center in Still River, and held membership with the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, and John Birch Society. He was a voracious reader and enjoyed the lifelong hobbies of photography, electronics, and US Naval and military history. Above all, he was a devoted family man, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Calling hours will be held from 6 until 8PM on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at St. Ann’s House, Sisters of St. Benedict Center, 254 Still River Rd., Still River. A Requiem Mass will be offered at 10AM on Thursday, May 19, 2022 at St. Ann’s Chapel, 254 Still River Rd., Still River, with a committal service to follow at 1PM at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen St., Winchendon.
