Earl Hill Moore was born July 16, 1932 in Flo, Texas to Afton McGee “Colonel” & Lois Edith (Hill) Moore. He attended school at Lone Star School in Flo through his Sophomore year and then completed his Junior and Senior years at Centerville High School. While in school, Earl excelled in basketball, baseball and football. His talent in basketball earned him a scholarship to Tyler Junior College in the fall of 1950. In 1951, his team won the National Junior College Basketball Championship. In 2001, the 1951 basketball team was honored and presented with a championship ring. A team photo is displayed in the Wagstaff Gym on the TJC campus in Tyler. Earl served in the United States Army at Fort Hood, Texas from 1951 to 1953 in the 634th C Company Armor and Infantry Battalion. On April 3, 1955, Earl married the love of his life, Betty Watson. They adopted two daughters, Lori & Sheri, which Earl always felt was one of the best days of his life. He and Betty raised their family in the Port Arthur and Groves, Texas areas where Earl worked for Texaco and retired after forty-two years. They moved back to Leon County where the couple lived out their days enjoying retirement. Earl was a member of both Parker and Brushy Cemetery Boards, as well as an instrumental member of the Leon County Genealogical Society for a number of years. He was also a supporter of the Lone Star Community Center. Although raised Baptist in his younger years, Earl attended the First United Methodist Church in Centerville, Texas. Earl passed away May 13, 2022 in Palestine, Texas. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; wife, Betty Moore and son-in-law, Ronnie Barnett. Surviving family members include daughters, Lori Barnett of Flo and Sheri Sheppard (husband, James) of Lumberton; sister, Lona Zane East (husband, Don) of Port Neches and grandson, Colin Andrew Harris of Lumberton, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and friends. Funeral services honoring the life of Earl Hill Moore will be held 11 A.M., Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas. Rev. Billy House will officiate the service. Interment will be in Liberty Cemetery. A brief visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Pallbearers: James Sheppard, Colin Harris, Bobby East, Jim Hill, George Aghaei, Jacob Dunn Arrangements are under the direction of Walters Funeral Home, Centerville, Texas.
