David McCalmont Obituary

David “Dave” McCalmont, 77 years old, was born in Jersey City and lived most of his life in Bloomfield. He loved life and the infinite opportunities life had to offer in both his business and personal life. He took advantage of trying diverse activities as they arose and were both professionally and personally feasible. He was graduated from Bloomfield High School in 1962 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing from Fairleigh Dickenson University. He attended the New School for Social Research in New York, taking numerous packaging courses. Beginning his entrepreneurship, he was the owner of two retail businesses in town, namely, the Printing Plant in Bloomfield Center, and Classic Baskets on Broad Street. Simultaneously, his career in Packaging Engineering was taking flight which spanned almost 45 years, working for such companies as Westinghouse Electric (where he met the love of his life, Jeanne Mianecki), JCPenney NYC headquarters, American Cyanamid, Hartz Mountain, Avon Products, Tsumura International, and Merchandising Innovations. He was an inventor, who was issued five patent awards for designing unique packages as well as a real estate investor, owning multiple properties in Bloomfield, Belleville, and Nutley. He also owned a Packaging Engineering consulting firm for many years and consulted for such companies as Combe Products, Phillips Lighting, CCA Industries and Cosmetic Essence International. He was a member of the Bloomfield Rent Leveling Board for 8 years, being Chairman for most of those years, and on the School Board of Saint Valentine’s School. After working in Corporate America he chose to become a licensed real estate appraiser, being the CEO of Northern NJ Appraisals, LLC, for many years. Dave's military service included 6 years in the NJ Army National Guard. He also loved foreign travel with Venice, Monte Carlo and the castles in western Ireland being his favorite locations. He traveled extensively, visiting 46 of the 50 states and traveled to over 20 foreign countries and he was a gaming enthusiast, traveling to Las Vegas, Atlantic City, the Caribbean Islands, South America and Europe to enjoy the activity. He was also a firearms aficionado and expert marksman, a lifetime member of the NRA and a certified NRA instructor. Dave was a classic car enthusiast and a member of the Cadillac Allante/XLR club, owning both a Cadillac Allante and a Cadillac XLR along with numerous Cadillacs over the years. He was also a member of the Corvette Club of NJ owning two vintage Corvettes, a ‘68 and a ‘64. He was a lifelong fan of Doo-Wop Music, and enjoyed attending live Doo-Wop performances. He enjoyed learning for learning’s sake... he took many courses at the Montclair Adult School, one being memoir writing, which he used to help him write his memoir to his twin grandsons for their edification and enjoyment. His last wish was that his grandsons have as interesting, varied, satisfying and enjoyable life as he did, if not better. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Dorothea McCalmont (née Piskorski) and William ”Dave” McCalmont. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jeanne,(née Mianecki), his loving daughter, Susan, his twin grandsons, Christopher and Michael, and his brother Thomas and his wife, Fran, who reside in New Mexico and many other family and friends, too many to mention. One of his greatest attributes was his sense of humor, which he held on to, until the end. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Relatives and Friends are invited to attend the Funeral On Thursday, May 19th at the Funeral Home at 8:45 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Immaculate Conception Cemetery, Montclair.
