Ruth M. Edgcombe Obituary

EDGCOMBE, Ruth Mary – of Marion, MI, age 84, went to be with the Lord Jesus on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at her daughter Elizabeth Tubbs’ home in Clio, MI. A celebration of Ruth’s life will be held 12 PM, Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at New Covenant Church, 13176 N. Linden Rd., Clio, MI 48420, Pastors Barry Briggs and Dan Shinabarger officiating. Family will receive visitors at the church from 10 AM until the time of service at 12 PM. Luncheon will follow the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Marion Area Historical Museum, 505 S. Mill St., Marion, MI 49665. Ruth was the youngest of five children born to a Lutheran pastor, Ora Riemer, and his wife Anita in Flint, MI. Ruth graduated from high school and was employed as a Michigan Bell Telephone operator. She raised six children, and then worked for 20 years at the Sears Department Store in Flint, where she retired from. Ruth was known for loving her family, which she and Virgil (deceased) raised in Flushing, MI. Their home was open to many young people who were friends of the children, and it saw a great number of family gatherings and celebrations over the 30 years they lived there. Ruth made many lifetime friendships in Flushing, including those with the women in her monthly card club and weekly bowling league. Ruth was an excellent seamstress, making and selling dresses and aprons. After moving to Marion, MI, where she bought a house and lived for 20 years, Ruth became involved in the Historical Society and played the organ at Marion United Methodist Church. She was a great cook and baker. Some of her specialties included lasagna and apple crisp, as well as decorating cakes. Ruth worked diligently on her yard, home (with many antiques), and garden, all of which were beautiful. She had an incredible gift of conversation and humor. After having a stroke in 2015, she moved into one of her daughters’ homes and continued to be involved with the things she loved – gardening, the Hallmark Channel, old Western shows, and teaching her very special caregiver, Carol McKay, how to sew. Together, Carol and Ruth made and sold over 100 aprons. To the end, Ruth faithfully watched the online services at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hemlock, MI, while following the singing and responsive readings in her hymnal. Surviving are: Daughter, Elizabeth (Jack) Tubbs, Son, David (Colleen) Edgcombe, Son, Greg (Laurie) Edgcombe, Son, Mark (Diane) Edgcombe, Daughter, Mary (Dan) Nichols, and Daughter, Suzanne (John) Ray.
