Thomson- Mrs. Wahldean Brunson, 96, of Thomson, Ga, entered into rest on Saturday, May 14, 2022.

A lifelong resident of McDuffie County, she was born on July 1, 1925, the daughter of the late Sam Walker McCorkle and Kate Simon McCorkle. She was predeceased by her husband, C. William “Billy” Brunson and all her siblings. 

She graduated with a degree in Secretarial Science from Georgia State College for Women. She began her business career with the Federal Reserve Bank in Atlanta and retired from Thomson Oak Flooring in Thomson as Director of Sales. 

Mrs. Brunson was a former member of the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers Association where she was the first woman elected to its board of directors and later elected first woman president. She was the first woman elected to the board of directors at the Bank of Thomson and Allied Bank. She was a former member and president of the Thomson Chapter of the National Secretaries Association, a director of Thomson McDuffie Chamber of Commerce and the American Heart Association McDuffie County Division. She was the first woman to serve on the Board of the McDuffie United Fund and received the United Fund Outstanding Citizenship Award. She was the first elected member from McDuffie County to serve on the board of directors of Augusta Technical College and was elected vice-chairman. She was active in community affairs having served as chairman of many successful residential drives. She was a member of Thomson First United Methodist Church where she served in various capacities; J.O.Y. Sunday School class and former Sunday School teacher. A strong believer in the power of pray, she served on the prayer chain and intercessory Prayer Ministry. She also volunteered at the church’s soup kitchen. 

Survivors include her son, Dr. Charles Brunson (Tammy Kay) and grandsons, Billy Brunson of Atlanta and Bob Brunson (Bonnie) of Ila, Ga and three great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be Tommy Dudley, Mike Dudley, Doug Whitaker, Frank Wills, Bill Beckum, Dr. Tommy Neal, David Swint, and Ben Barmore. Honorary Pallbearers are M.G. Johnson, Patrick Fern, Dr. Bill Jopling, Jay Wilson, Jim Alfriend, Dean Hilson, Lewis Smith, Bob Knox Jr., Andy Knox, Gene Walker, Tommy Montgomery, Billy Tam, Larry Thompson, Jack Young, and J.O.Y Sunday School Class.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 4 p.m., on Wednesday, May 18, 2022, in the Thomson First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Charles Broome and Dr. Steve Dodson officiating. A private burial will follow at the Savannah Valley Memorial  Gardens. 

Friends may call at the Curtis Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. till the hour of service on Wednesday in the Fellowship Hall at the Thomson First United Methodist Church.
