Gizella Dobo Obituary

DOBO, Gizella (née Szabo)

(May 27, 1931 - May 14, 2022) -

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our sweet beautiful mother after her long struggle with declining health. We are comforted to know that she is reunited with her beloved husband Sandor who left us suddenly in 1980.

Born in Tatabanya, Hungary, mom was 9 years old when WWII began. She was fetching water from the village well when she heard an airplane overhead. It was an American fighter plane swooping down to shoot her. The plane was so close that when she fell, spilling the water, she looked up and saw the pilot’s face. Seeing that she was just a young girl, the pilot swerved away. We thank that pilot for allowing our mother to live on and have a family.

Later, when Russia invaded Hungary in 1956, she and her husband carried their 2 toddlers to safety. They travelled through the night as they made passage to Canada. They left everything behind including their parents & siblings. Things were difficult for them as refugees forging a new life in strange surroundings with two children in tow. They began their new life in western Canada and it wasn’t long before they brought a third child into the world. They eventually settled permanently in Ontario. Our mom took great pride in raising her kids all while keeping an impeccable home.

We will greatly miss her amazing cooking. She would lovingly spend hours over the hot stove preparing a delicious meal for the bunch of us but would not join us at the table as it gave her tremendous pleasure to just stand back and watch as we dug in with joy on our faces. Her husband often said that her cooking was like medicine. A talented chef to the end, every meal was a treat.

She was very social and loved going to the Hungarian Balls where she and her husband would dance the night away, they were both quite accomplished dancers.

Gizella is predeceased (1980) by her husband Sandor/Alexander and leaves behind 3 children and 5 grandchildren: Eva Haynes (spouse Gary H., deceased, & their son Robert), Mary Gerovac (spouse Gary G. & their daughters Meghan & Michelle), Alex Dobo (spouse Shereen Woodworth & his daughters Charlotte & Amy). Gizella also had 7 great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Rivers and Millicent….Charlize…..Elijah, Andreas and Noah.

The family wishes to thank the good doctors and staff at Mt. Sinai Hospital for caring for our mom during her last few months and especially to our sister Eva who worked tirelessly to bring her food, comfort and companionship during that time all while COVID restrictions were in place. We thank her from the bottom of our hearts.

We love you Anyu….until we meet again!
