Robert E. Dunkelman Obituary

On Thursday May 12, 2022, Robert E. Dunkelman, age 91 passed away. He is the beloved husband of almost 56 years to Barbara L. Dunkelman, father of Missy Udekwu, grandfather of Lily Udekwu, brother of the late Hazel Dunkelman and Edna Treece, and is also survived by nieces and nephews. Born and raised in Wilmerding, Bob earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.  After working in accounting for Westinghouse and serving in the military, he returned to his alma mater in 1958 and launched what became a 44-year career at Pitt.  Among the many positions he held were Budget Director, Vice Provost for Resource Management, Interim Senior Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance, and Secretary of the Board of Trustees and Special Assistant to the Chancellor. When Bob retired, the Pitt Trustees named him Secretary Emeritus.  He is the only former Board Secretary of the University of Pittsburgh to have been honored in that way. In commenting on the passing, Pitt Chancellor Emeritus Mark Nordenberg said, “Bob Dunkelman was a good friend, highly valued colleague and trusted advisor to me for much of my career.  He was an exceptionally capable professional who regularly made distinctively important contributions to Pitt’s progress.  He also was a wonderful human being. I do not know of a single person who did not like and respect Bob, and I could not even begin to count the people who considered him to be a mentor and friend.” As committed as he was to Pitt and his professional responsibilities, his wife, daughter and granddaughter sat at the center of Bob’s life. He met Barbara when she was working as a flight attendant and felt very fortunate that she was willing to leave that life to marry him and start a family.  Many years later, when she returned to work, Bob and Missy, who already were very close, built even stronger bonds as they worked to manage their lives together when Barbara was away from home on long flights.  More recently, there was nothing Bob enjoyed more than the trips to Florida that he and Barbara made to visit Missy and Lily. Bob also made important contributions to the community.  Among many other activities, he served as an Elder of the Shadyside Presbyterian Church, President of the Pitcairn-Crabbe Foundation, and a long-time member of the Board of the Pennsylvania Organization for Women in Early Recovery.  He also was a 33rd degree Mason and was active in the Pittsburgh Children’s Dyslexia Center, part of a thirteen-state effort sponsored by the Masons to promote academic success through early intervention in the lives of children and families coping with dyslexia. Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons, Inc. (freyvogelfuneralhome.com) 4900 Centre Avenue at Devonshire Street on Monday from 3–7p.m. Funeral Tuesday at Shadyside Presbyterian Church 11a.m., followed by a reception in the church atrium. Interment will be private.  The family suggests that memorial gifts may be made either to the Shadyside Presbyterian Church or to the Swanson School of Engineering of the University of Pittsburgh.
