Mickey Lapp Cartersville, Georgia Obituary

Mickey Lapp

Mickey Lapp, age 73, passed away peacefully while surrounded by her four daughters on Wednesday 11th of May. Mickey was born on August 27, 1948, to Mary Hazel Haithcock and Kenneth Harold Simmons Sr. Mickey grew up with her older brother, Kenneth Harold Simmons Jr. who was only a year older than herself. Over the years both Mickey and Kenneth would enjoy sharing stories with the family about their many adventures as children. Mickey also shared a full childhood with cousins and close friends who loved her dearly.

Mickey excelled in everything she did, and she did not allow herself to settle for a life that would not fulfill her need for a full and adventurous life. After graduating high school, she went on to take the Civil Service test, which allowed her to enter employment with the federal government. She served the federal government for 39 years, during which time she continued to live her life to the fullest. While living in Columbus, Georgia at Fort Benning, Mickey married and had her first three daughters: Denise Ramey, Rebecca Harp, and Jennifer Finnell. Anyone who knew Mickey, knew her to be a strong and independent woman through and through. After her divorce, Mickey was given the opportunity as a federal employee to move to Puerto Rico with her three daughters, where they lived for 2 ½ years.

Mickey’s career then took her and her daughters to Germany where they lived for 3 years. While in Germany she met the father of her fourth daughter, Jessica Harrell. At 3 months pregnant Mickey and her girls moved back to the states, to Texas where she gave birth to her final daughter. In 1992, after living in Texas for almost 5 years, Mickey then moved her family to Cartersville, Georgia, where she took up a permanent residence.

From the years 2001-2006 Mickey would continue her service to the federal government by taking assignments to Iraq, Kuwait, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and Germany.

In 2006, after 39 years and 11 months, Mickey retired from the federal government as a Contract Administrator. She then shifted her focus to her grandchildren. Mickey chose to serve her community by volunteering her time at her local homeless shelter, becoming a CNA, and she most enjoyed volunteering at her local animal shelter.

Mickey was an avid animal lover and could never turn away a pet in need. She would go above and beyond to ensure that all pets knew that they were loved.

Mickey is survived by her daughters; Denise Ramey (Rick), Rebecca Harp (Mike), Jennifer Finnell (Joe), Jessica Harrell (Josh), her brother, Kenneth Simmons Jr. (Shirley), her grandchildren; Joshua DiPrima, Haley Borchelt (Spencer), Breanna Goss, Zachary Harp, Savannah Finnell, Kinley Harrell, and Allie Harrell, as well as several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her father Kenneth Simmons Sr., her mother, Hazel Shelley (Haithcock), her stepfather, Owen Shelley, and her grandson Kodie Goss.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Mickey on Saturday, May 21st at 11:00AM at Crosspoint City Church in Cartersville, Ga.
