Thomas Walker, Jr. Obituary

Thomas Walker Jr, 57, of South Orange, NJ, passed away on May 6th after a valiant battle with congestive heart failure. Thomas was born on June 27th, 1964, to Thomas and Dorothy Walker in Newark, NJ. He grew up in Newark and East Orange and attended both Irvington and East Orange High Schools. His most cherished memories as a child and young man were time spent with his family worshiping at his grandfather’s church, Reverend C.C. Amica Memorial Baptist Church, located at Hawthorne Avenue, in Newark. Thomas began his career in the Food Services Industry where he developed a passion for mastering his culinary skills. He worked at several restaurants including Swenson’s, The Rusty Scupper, The Waffle House, and The Office, before settling with Compass Group with an illustrious 20 year-career preparing cuisine for the employees of MBNA and the Newark Archdiocese. Thomas and his wife also owned a catering business and restaurant named “Thomaes.” Thomas believed that food was a universal tool that helped to bring people together, and by serving people with nourishment and a smile, he did his part to nourish souls. His favorite pastime was cooking on the grill and entertaining family and friends. In 1985, he married Anita Turpin, their marriage was short due to her untimely death in 1986. He met his wife Dorinda in 1988, and immediately became enamored by her hazel eyes, warm and easy-going nature. They began dating in 1989 and married in 1993. Their bond created three children, Janae (Nay Nay), Thomas, and Timothy (Timmy). His children were his pride and joy. In their youth, he never missed a basketball, baseball, football, or Volleyball game. He served as a coach for sons’ baseball, football, and basketball teams in Bloomfield, NJ. He loved helping to nurture youth and made it a point to befriend every neighbor wherever he resided. He had a knack for making people laugh and in every conversation, you could always count on his infamous saying, “Let me leave you with something…” before he imparted some statement to make you smile. Thomas loved music and there was never a day where you would not hear the Whispers, Delfonics, Stylistics and other R&B groups in his household. He was an energetic soul, and his jokes were unmatched. He spent the latter part of his life enjoying time with family and friends, spoiling his granddaughter “Shugz”, and traveling with his wife and children. Thomas is predeceased by his former spouse, Anita Walker and his stepfather, Edward McDaniel. He is survived by his wife, Dorinda; his three children Janae. Thomas, and Timothy; his granddaughter Nevaeh (Shugz); his mother, Dorothy; his brother Timothy, his sisters, Denise, Valerie, and Malinda, brothers-in-law James (Buddy) and Jeff; his nephews, Shawn, Aaron, Jeff, Jr., and Nash; his nieces Jessica, Alnisa and Aranyse along with a host of great nieces, a great nephew, cousins, and relatives.
