Gary Meling, 74, of Marshalltown, Iowa, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on the evening of May 7th, 2022 surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Iowa River Hospice. Services for Gary will be held on Wednesday, May 11th, 2022 beginning at 4:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorials in Gary’s name may be directed to Iowa River Hospice, St. Jude’s Hospital, or a renal cancer research association of the donor’s choice. Gary Steven Meling was born on September 8th, 1947 to parents Louis and Lucille (Drew) Meling in Gilman, Iowa. Gary attended school in Green Mountain and graduated in the class of 1965. Gary was hired at Fisher Controls (Emerson.) after graduating from high school. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1966 and completed Basic Training and his Advanced Individual Training (AIT) specializing in Hercules Missiles. Gary was reassigned to the adjutant general core at Fort Bliss, Texas. During that time, he met his wife, Nora. Gary was transferred to Germany during his final eight months of service. He was assigned as a company clerk in an engineering company. He returned to Marshalltown, Iowa upon completion of his military service. On June 7, 1969, he married the love of his life. While working at Fisher Controls, he attended MCC and studied accounting. Gary worked for Fisher Controls (Emerson) in the assembly department and retired after 40 years. In his free time, Gary was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and taught Catechism classes. Upon retiring Gary served as the Vice President for the Filipino-American Group in Marshalltown, and was involved with the Filipino American Society in Des Moines. Additionally, he coached his two boys while they played baseball. Gary donated over 38 gallons of blood for the Red Cross. He loved to go fishing, hunting, and worked tirelessly in his vegetable garden. Gary would spend much of his free time working outdoors, mushroom hunting, and going for walks. He enjoyed spending time with his family and extended family and their children. Those left to remember and cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years, Nora V. Meling; his son, Craig (Christopher Bedford) Meling; his siblings, David (Alice) Meling, William Meling, Karl Meling, Dale (Rosemary) Meling and Judy Meling; his aunt Susan Drew-Gould; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Abraham (Rebecca) Molina of Seattle Washington and Alfredo (Ruth) Apuan of El Paso, Texas; his extended family, Earl (Juanita) Roberts, Mark (Maria) McDaniel, Greg (Naida) Abernathy, and John (Carmen) Redding. He was life long friends with Zoe McGraw of North Carolina, Freddie Cheville of Marshalltown, Doug Brown of Missouri, and Rick and Mercy Meadors of Newton, Iowa; and his numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his son, Clifford James Meling; his parents, Louis and Lucille Meling; his father and mother-in-law, Osmundo (Lorenza) Nunez Sr.; his two brother-in-laws and sister-in -law, Nehemias (Mary Grace) Nunez, and Osmundo Nunez Jr. and his nephew Jeff Meling.
