Andrew Wernicke, 23, passed away Friday morning, May 6, 2022, at his home in Waukesha. The son of Dean Wernicke and Sue Zimmerman, Andrew was born September 16, 1998, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Andrew graduated from Brookfield Central High School in 2017 and attended the University of Whitewater. During those years, and prior, Andrew courageously battled brain cancer, first diagnosed in 2010, at age eleven. Andrew was a naturally gifted athlete: He especially enjoyed baseball, golf and football. He had a special talent with baseball with the ability to throw a 50 mile per hour pitch, over the plate, at age nine. He was also an avid sports fan, having personal relationship with PGA Tour golfer, Tommy Fleetwood, several Major League Baseball players and even NFL players. Some meetings arranged by the Make-A-Wish organization, others by simple generosity. Andrew enjoyed the meaningful relationship with Ryan Braun and a number of other, very supportive members of the Milwaukee Brewers organization and other professional athletes. Andrew was a wonderful brother, respectful son and a great friend to many. He was always positive, a good listener, and most of all a gentle spirit and soul. He never complained in spite of enduring and battling cancer over the last twelve years, with multiple brain surgeries, continuous chemotherapy and radiation, plus ongoing, internal suffering that only he knew. He impacted thousands of lives while he was here and will continue to change lives even after he is gone. He was and is a hero: He was a gift to those whose path he crossed. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten. Survivors include his sister, Paige Wernicke, Brookfield; his parents, Dean (Lori) Wernicke, Waukesha and Sue Zimmerman, Brookfield; his grandparents, Dave & Joyce Wernicke, Pound, Elmer (Terri) Zimmerman, Brookfield, Beatrice Zimmerman, Brookfield; Uncles, Mark (Rolean) Wernicke and Mark (Mary Beth) Zimmerman; Aunts, Dawn (Todd) Hemm and Linda Bruch and Beth (Dan) Stewart and also numerous nephews and nieces. The family extends a special thank you to Andrew’s closest friend Michael Lemke for his kindness and compassion over the years. Additionally, the family is grateful for the support and contributions from hundreds of community members, classmates, and others that supported Andrew during his twelve-year battle with cancer. Visitation for family and friends will be held at Brookfield Lutheran Church, 18500 Burleigh Rd., Brookfield on Friday, May 13, from 2:30 PM visitation until time of Funeral Ceremony which will commence at 5:00 PM. All are welcome. To help ease the heavy financial burden for Andrew’s medical and funeral expenses, we are asking for memorial contributions to be made to the family in lieu of flowers. Other donations can be made in honor of Andrew to Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, Camp One Step, Make a Wish, the Ronald McDonald House Charities, these organizations are special to The Wernicke family.
