Col. Charles B. Heimburg (ret.), 79, passed away on April 27, 2022 after a two year fight with metastatic bladder cancer. Charles managed his illness with prayer and faith, guidance from an exceptional team of physicians and nurses, and the love and support of his family. He lived his last days as he lived his whole life: trusting in God’s goodness and timing. On his final day, he was surrounded by his wife and children, whom he adored.
Charles was born in Buffalo, NY in 1943 to Chester W. Heimburg and Mary Jane (Hall) Heimburg but spent the majority of his youth in Orlando, FL. He grew up with two younger brothers, John Hall Heimburg and David Paul Heimburg.
Charles graduated with honors from Florida State University in 1964, completed his law degree at the University of Florida, and was admitted into the Florida Bar in 1967. In 1967, Charles joined the Air Force serving the next 30 years in the Judge Advocate General’s corps. During his tenure Charles performed a variety of judicial services including prosecuting attorney, defense counsel, district court judge, and Appellate Military Judge on the Air Force Court of Criminal Appeals.
His years of military service provided ample opportunity for Charles to follow his love of travel. He and his family moved 11 times in 30 years to places as far reaching as Guam and Germany. Charles took up bicycling and completed the Mountains–to–Coast ride in North Carolina in 2011.
Upon retirement, Charles spent the next fifteen years as associate pastor for Parkwood Baptist Church in Burke, VA. His primary focus was outreach ministry, which included supporting the church’s public daycare, ensuring the Sunday School program had the resources it needed, and ensuring the church’s success in reaching out to the community.
Charles’s greatest accomplishment was his family. He was a kind and loving husband to his wife of 57 years, Carolyn (Ferrell) Heimburg. He is dearly loved by his children Pamela (Heimburg) Flora and Charles B. Heimburg II, and seven grandchildren. In addition, Charles also leaves behind his brothers and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will hold a private service at Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in honor of Charles to ¬¬the Inova Schar Cancer Foundation or the Salvation Army.
