Curtis Leon Cooney, (Curt), of Shelby, IA, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2022, surrounded by his family. Curt was born October 16, 1938, in Portsmouth, IA, to Ralph and Hazel Cooney. Curt was baptized as a baby in the Methodist Church and again baptized as an adult at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Neola, Iowa. Curt grew up on a farm near Woodbine, Iowa, where his love for farming and Massey Harris tractors developed. His love of the farm led him to a life-long hobby of collecting toy tractors, amassing over 400? during his lifetime. Curt graduated from Woodbine High School in 1957 and later attended Iowa Western Community College, receiving a certificate in welding. On February 14, 1967, Curt married his wife of 61 years, Ruth (Cline) Cooney. To this union, a son and four daughters were born. Curt and Ruth raised their children in Persia, Iowa. Curt took great pride in his 41 years of sobriety and received immense pleasure from studying the Bible. He loved his five children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. Curt was an avid fan of his grandchildren, traveling all over western Iowa to watch them play sports as they grew up. Curt is survived by his wife Ruth (Cline) Cooney, son Michael Cooney of Council Bluffs IA, daughters Lori McConnel (Rob) of Colorado Springs CO, Dee Anna Nevills (William) of Pennsylvania, Shaylea Caris (Aldo) of Shelby, IA, Angela Baylor (William) of Anita, IA, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents, Ralph and Hazel Cooney, brother, Charles Cooney, and sister, Shirley Cooney. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Monday, May 09, 2022. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 10, 2022. Interment is in Valley View Cemetery, near Persia, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to Hansen House.
