Sylvia L. Ross

Sylvia Ross, 91, of Wyomissing, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2022 at the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading, PA. Born in Reading on June 9, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Glenn C. and Lucy K. (Breneman) Ross. A 1948 graduate of Wyomissing High School, Sylvia graduated from Denison University, Granville, Ohio in 1952, receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education. She received her Master’s Degree in Sacred Music at Union Theological Seminary, New York City, and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting at the University of Illinois in 1972. Sylvia was a member of Lincoln Park United Methodist Church, Reading, and Vineville United Methodist Church, Macon, Georgia. Sylvia was a Professor of Music at Wesleyan College, Macon, GA, for 34 years, retiring in 1993. She was a Diaconal Minister of Music at Vineville United Methodist Church. She volunteered with the Reading Symphony Orchestra League. Sylvia was active as a volunteer with the American Cancer Society with the Road to Recovery Program, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi. Sylvia was predeceased by her sister, Helen Mallon, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey. She is survived by her sister Margaret Hey wife of Dr. E. Berry Hey, Jr., of Leesport, PA as well as her niece, Linda Mallon of Washington, D.C., and nephews, Stephen Mallon, of Wyndmoor, PA and Glenn Jones, of Harrisburg, NC, and several grand nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 12:00 P.M. at Lincoln Park United Methodist Church, 1 Carlisle Ave., Reading, PA 19606. Interment private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Doctors Without Borders USA, PO Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030; or Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax Dr., Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.
