Brian Joseph Duggan Obituary

Brian Joseph Duggan, 64, died suddenly May 3 of a ruptured aneurysm. Brian, executive director of the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment, was married to Helen Alvaré, with whom he had three beloved children: Catherine, Julian and Robert Paul. Brian graduated from Northwood High School in Silver Spring, received his bachelor’s degree from Villanova University (where he and Helen met) and an MBA from George Washington University. He started his career as an auditor/accountant for Arthur Andersen in Connecticut and New York, before moving to Blue Cross in Philadelphia. After this, he was a US/Japan trade analyst at the International Trade Division of the Dept. of Commerce in Washington, DC. Following that, he was the federal government liaison for two automotive trade associations. For the last chapter of his career, he worked for various pro-life organizations, spending the last five years as the creative, adroit, and indefatigable executive director of the organization launched by the U.S. Catholic bishops to enable grassroots Catholics to advocate federally for pro-life laws. Brian, who kept all his friends from third grade on, was blessed with the gift of friendship. He had the rare ability to connect with—and treasure – anyone of any age. He was known for his loyalty, generosity and sly, but devastatingly riotous sense of humor. He never worried about others’ opinions, but was himself always. He loved fishing, tennis and playing squash at the Jewish Community Center. He was also a lifelong radio enthusiast for BBC/France, 24/Democracy Now and any late-night radio madness. Most of all, Brian cherished marriage, fatherhood and family life. He met Helen when she was 17 and he was 20, and they were best friends for 44 years, married for 37. Brian was the son of the late Teresa and Robert Paul Duggan and the brother of Robert and Chris Duggan and brother-in- law of Laurie Gregorio. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, May 9, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 7500 Pearl St., Bethesda, MD 20814. The family will receive guests as early as 8 a.m. at Lourdes. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Aspen Hill, MD. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Good Counsel Homes at https://www.goodcounselhomes.org
