Richard L. Waldron, 76, passed away on Monday, May 2, 2022, in Hamilton, NJ. Richard was born in Trenton, New Jersey, to Claire Condon and Richard L Waldron Sr. He had one sister, Suzanne, who sadly preceded his death, at a young age. Richard was well known for his big heart, great wit, storytelling emails, and huge love of learning. He was often seen with a book in his hand, and with his love, Lorraine, by his side. He most enjoyed time visiting friends, hanging out with his grandkids, reading at the beach, and watching/attending baseball games. Richard graduated with a BA from Trenton State College and an MA in history from St. John’s University. He had a long career of service to both the New Jersey Studies community and NJSAA. He worked in the planetarium at the NJ State Museum before coming to the NJHC (New Jersey Historical Commission) as a Public Programs Coordinator in 1974, Commissions Associate Director in 1976 and ultimately the Executive Director (1991–1999). Among his accomplishments at NJHC was helping, along with Maxine Lurie and Karl Niederer, to launch the CAPES archival consulting service in 1988. He became an NJSAA founding member in 1992 and for many years he was Treasurer and Chair, of the Paul Stellhorn Award Committee that evaluates and gives awards to undergraduate students. In 1999, he became Executive Director of the American Swedish Historical Museum in Philadelphia. He was also the coeditor of New Sweden in America. He spent much of his career helping to organize public education programs, including multiple annual conferences and conventions for the NJHC, the NJ State Museum and the Swedish museum. In the Fall of 2021 Richard was awarded the New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance presented the Maxine Lurie Distinguished Service Award. Richard was an adjunct history professor at Kean University, Rutgers University (New Brunswick), and Seton Hall University. He lectured on historical topics including science and technology, the colony of new Sweden, the New Jersey shore, the American revolution, and the European age of exploration. In addition, he authored and co-authored several publications on his various studies and teachings Outside of his multiple educational endeavors Richard was involved at his church, First Presbyterian Church of Hamilton Square. He began serving as a deacon beginning in 2001, and worked as a volunteer for Women’s Space, Homefront, and Ginny’s Pantry. He is survived by his daughter, Christine (husband Jay); his son Matthew (wife Emily); his four grandchildren, Brooke, Nicholas, Cole, and Alex; his dear cousins; and his many friends and colleagues. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ, with a funeral service following at 1:30 p.m. Burial will conclude at Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton. Masks are optional for the funeral services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard’s memory to HomeFront, Inc. (a program that helps homeless families with children to break the cycle of poverty), Womanspace (which combats domestic and sexual violence), and the Outreach Committee of the First Presbyterian Church of Hamilton Square.
