Jean Moroz

Jean Moroz of Erickson, Manitoba passed away at the Erickson Health Care Centre at the age of 96 years.

Jean was born to George and Dora Semeniuk on the farm, SE 11-18-20 W, east of Sandy Lake on March 6, 1926. She was the fifth sibling of twelve born.  She went to school in Sandy Lake and helped out on the farm.

She met and married Peter John Ewashko on August 5, 1945.  They moved to a farm on SW 21-17-19 W in the R.M of Harrison.  She would raise a family of four, Lawrence, Victor, Dora and Patsy.  Sadly on September 14, 1970 her husband Peter passed, leaving her to manage the farm, raise a family also helping her mom and dad on the farm near Sandy Lake.  She also worked a summer job, cleaning rental cabins at Clear Lake between the morning and evening chores.  She also helped in several parish churches from cleaning, lunches, bake sales to name a few and making the communion bread for the priests. Many years later, Jean would move from the farm to Sandy Lake to be a caregiver to her dad after her mom’s passing.  She loved all her grandchildren and great grandchildren no matter where they were, they were always in her thoughts.

She married Alex Moroz on June 15, 2002, at The Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic church in Sandy Lake, Manitoba. Jean and Alex later moved to reside in Erickson, Manitoba.

She was baba to anyone that stopped by and usually never left the table without a snack or meal.  No one could pass up a plate of perogies, because baba’s were the best. When the grandchildren stopped by, she never failed to fill them up with the goodness of her perogies ….and to send a package home with them. If that wasn’t enough, baba had a sweet tooth, so there was always a dainty or two with coffee or tea.  If anyone knew Jean, there was never just a quick visit…..food was surely to be set before you! Even the neighbor, that cut the grass and snow removal when she couldn’t, got some perogies....many heartfelt thanks to Vern.

She was also known for her love of flowers.  On the farm the hollyhocks stood 8’ tall in rows of many colors and along the house, as well as many other flowers.  In Sandy Lake there was a beautiful row of peonies pink, white, and red that she was very proud of.  In Erickson there wasn’t a spare spot that mom didn’t have a planter of flowers like her many bright red geraniums and her double inpatients.  They were along the trailer, on the steps….a quote is “ a green thumb”,   mom had a green hand because anything she touched grew healthy and happy!!! That also reflected on the half section garden she had too (seemed that big, hilling all those borabolli – potatoes). She loved potatoes in every form and had to have potatoes everyday, but the bowl of porridge first, to start the day!!

Jean was predeceased by her husbands Peter Ewashko and Alex Moroz, Brothers John and Harry, her sisters Anne, Mary, Margaret, Jessie, Irene.

Surviving are two daughters; Dora and Patsy, 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 from the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church with Fr. Jay Korbin officiating. Interment will follow at the St. Nicholas Cemetery in Ozerna. 

Pallbearers will be: Mathew Ewashko, Ted Rebenchuk, Allan Rebenchuk, Robert Burrows, Blake Hubert, Warren Edmundson.  Honorary pallbearers the many nieces and nephews.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to Canada-Ukraine Foundation or the Erickson Health Centre.
