Kenneth Long

Kenneth L. Long, age 91, left this earthly life on Monday, May 2nd, while gazing out upon his farm from his window. He was in the place he loved with family at his side. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Spilger officiating. Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the services. He will be laid to rest in the Timber Creek Cemetery with full military honors by the combined VFW and American Legion Honor Guard. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Ph. 641-844-1234. Born on February 26th, 1931, in Marshalltown, he was the son of William and Thelma (May) Long, Sr. He graduated from the Marshalltown High School’s Class of 1950. Soon after graduation, Kenneth joined the United States Army and served our country honorably in the Korean War. Upon return, he began farming alongside his father. Farming was in his blood, and even moments before his passing he was instructing family what needed to be accomplished on the home place. Kenneth was a member of the Honor Flight recognizing our veterans. On May 21st, 1965, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Patricia Serfoss, in Marshalltown. The couple was blessed with three children. Left to cherish his memory are Patricia, his loving wife of nearly 57 years, his son Lyle (Kimberly) and daughter Dalonna (John) Clemens all of Marshalltown; grandchildren Vanessa Clemens, John Clemens “LJ”, Shelby Long, Quintin Long, Taylor Vibbard, Kaylin Vibbard, Kyra Long and Emily Long; brothers: Clair (Helen) Long, William (Virginia) Long and Darwin (Angie) Long all of Marshalltown, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In death, Kenneth rejoined his son, David, his parents, and infant brother, Erwin.
