Richard D. "Doc" Jamison, DVM Obituary

Richard Doyle “Doc” Jamison, DVM, 77, of Sidney, IA passed away Sunday, May 1, at Nebraska Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born February 14, 1945, in Topeka, KS to Posey Richard and Mildred Ellen Jamison. He graduated from Ottawa High School in 1963 before attending McPherson College where he pole vaulted for the track team. He married his high school sweetheart, Teresa Morrisey, on February 13, 1965, in Ottawa, KS. In 1967 he obtained his BA in Zoology from the University of Kansas and then earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Kansas State University in 1973, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He began his veterinary career in Steele, N.D. before moving to Sidney in 1975, where he worked and later became a partner at the Fremont County Veterinary Clinic with Dr. Tom Johnson. Doc was an active member of the American, Iowa, and Southwest Iowa Veterinary Medical Associations, serving a term on the executive board of the IVMA. The IVMA honored him as Iowa’s Veterinarian of the Year in 2004, and he was recognized for 40 consecutive years of membership in 2017. He retired in 2011, after 38 years caring for large and small animals and forming lasting relationships with hundreds of clients. As one of his colleagues said, “Working with Dr. Jamison is experiencing the practice of Veterinary Medicine the way it is meant to be. Knowledge, honesty, respect, and compassion for both animals and their owners, and the ability to inject a bit of humor when it is needed are all qualities that he possesses.” This is felt by all who knew him and applied to how he lived his life. Doc was active in many organizations in his community. Highlights include serving as a TeamMates mentor to several Sidney High School students, a director on the board of George C. Grape Memorial Hospital, a member of the Iowa Western Community College Veterinary Technician Advisory Board, and a member of the KSU Alumni Association. He was dedicated to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hamburg, serving as a Parish Council member, lector, member of the Ambassador Worship Team, and youth group leader. He enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, tending his garden, golfing, and cheering on his children and grandchildren at their many events. Doc was an avid KSU football fan and season ticket holder. He enjoyed following his Wildcats around the country, including trips to annual bowl games. He loved traveling and culinary adventures with Teresa by his side. He is survived by his wife; a son Tim (Laarni) Jamison, of Cedar Falls, IA; two daughters, Andrea (Buck) Clark, of Sidney, IA and Lou (Scott) Jensen, of Council Bluffs, IA; a sister Judy (Michel) Dubois of New York City, NY; eight grandchildren, Jake (Allison), Sam (Meredith), and Josh Jamison, Amber, Clinton, and Bradley Clark, and Lily and Ava Jensen; two great-granddaughters, Eisley and Eivie; and many other relatives and friends.
