Agnes Mary Bass

It is with shattered hearts that the family of Agnes (Aggie) Mary Bass announce her passing at the age of 71 years on April 27th, 2022 in Ste. Rose Du Lac, MB.

Aggie was born May 12th, 1950 in Ste. Rose, to Charles and Bernadette ( Lepla) Flower.  She grew up on the Flower family farm north of Ste. Rose with her parents and two siblings, older brother Roy and younger sister Ann, both of whom she had her own special bond with.

After high school Aggie worked at the pharmacy in Ste Rose.  During this time she met Norman Bass of Toutes Aides through her brother Roy as they worked together at the auction mart. Norman and Aggie married on November 28th, 1970 in Ste Rose after which she left the pharmacy to join Norman on the farm in Toutes Aides until their retirement in 2002.

Retirement brought so much happiness to Aggie as she loved living at the lake which opened up an entirely new world that she would’ve never imagined.  She loved being by the water, saying “how can there be no God when you see this beauty?” She loved spending time on the boat with Norman and friends, but oddly enough she couldn’t swim and was afraid of the water!

Aggie’s biggest strength was her faith in God. Always stating “I am blessed beyond measure”.

There was never a dull moment around Aggie and Norman’s home, serving coffee and food to visitors almost daily.  With so many people around them, she also loved her quiet time of solitude, and she often said “even when I’m alone I’m never alone.”  The day she learned about her illness there was not a lot of conversation as she processed the news, but then she quietly said “I will never be alone”.  Her faith never wavered, giving her strength in the most difficult times.  She never blamed God for difficult moments in her life, she just knew he would carry her through.

She had an appreciation and admiration of nature.  Rainbows, lady slippers in the spring, the sound of killdeers and whippoorwills, seeing deer, otters, and her most favourite were the hummingbirds… oh how she loved her hummingbirds.

Aggie loved shopping and she could always find a good deal.  Her love of jackets and shoes rivalled the best of the best shoppers! She enjoyed watching curling on TV and it was one of the things she and Norman had in common, always enjoying watching together. 

She loved music, especially a live band, and along with her love of music, she had a passion for dancing. Two-Step, foxtrot, seven-step, waltz, the jive, the list goes on; she even tried taking a jigging class at one point. She loved to dance and loved watching people dance. 

Through the years Aggie dedicated herself to her community, giving countless hours to the Toutes Aides church, community hall, cemetery and Spence Lake Community Council, she always gave her time whenever asked.

Her biggest love of all is her family.  She absolutely dedicated her life to her husband and her children, often sacrificing her own wants in order to make sure they were happy.  She never passed up the opportunity to have good conversations with her children and sometimes said what was hard to hear but she always did it lovingly and unconditionally. She absolutely adored all of her grandchildren, taking every opportunity to visit them and get them into a good game of cards.

Agnes is survived by her husband of 51 years Norman Bass of Spence Lake.  Son, Neil Bass (Terri) of High River, Alberta. Daughter, Carey Solomon (Nick) of Dauphin, MB. Grandchildren Steele Bass, Colton Desutter-Bass, Mackenzie Lackten, Keaton (Tasha) Lackten and Jordan (Brittney) Niven.  Two great-grandchildren Bo Niven and Ryker Lackten. Brother Roy Flower of The Narrows, MB, and Sister Ann (Ben) Epp of Saskatoon, SK, Brother-in-law Lorne (Fidelia) Bass of Gilbert Plains, MB, Sister-in-law Ruth Robertson of Calgary, AB, Sister-in-law Helen Goulet of Courtenay, BC, Sister-in-law Doris (Colin) Ross of High River, AB,  Sister-in-law Rae (Dale) Flower, along with several nieces and nephews.

Aggie was predeceased by her parents Charles and Bernadette ( Lepla) Flower, her Father-in-law and mother-in-law Virden and Terese Bass, husbands of Sisters-in-laws Sylvio Goulet and Jack Robertson, niece Kim McLeod of Pilot Butte, SK and several aunts and uncles within the Flower and Lepla families.

Funeral Mass was celebrated on Saturday, May 7th, 2022 at 3:00 pm in the Notre Dame de Toutes Aides Roman Catholic Church with celebrants Father Patrick Neufeld and Father Armand LeGal. All guests are welcome to join for a meal in celebration at the Lawrence Recreation Complex in Rorketon after the church service.  

Memorial donations may be made in honour of Aggie to the Ste. Rose Palliative Care Program or the Toutes Aides Cemetery.

The family thanks everyone involved in the care for Aggie.  The care she received from all involved was far beyond our expectations.  She always felt assured that she was being given the best possible comfort care during her difficult journey.  Thank you to the staff at the Ste. Rose Hospital, Jenna Zurba of Prairie Mountain Health Palliative Care and Theresa Peterson and Mona Fleming of Prairie Mountain Health Home Care. Also, thank you to all of our friends and family for their support; food, flowers, phone calls, visits, it all makes a difference.
