John Littleberry Hendry, III Obituary

John Littleberry Hendry III passed away peacefully at his home and entered the presence of His Lord and Savior on April 27, 2022.

John was born in Shanghai, China on December 3, 1930, the fourth child of John L. Hendry Jr. and Lutie Sutcliffe Hendry. John lost his mother Lutie suddenly, and two years later his father married Lois Sells, a missionary in Shanghai at the Door of Hope Mission, which gave shelter and education to young women and girls. Lois became a loving mother to John, his three sisters and his stepbrother.

John attended Shanghai American School in China until the age of 11 when the U.S. Consulate directed all women and children to evacuate China due to World War II.

John graduated from The Peddie School, Hightstown, New Jersey. In 1953, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in business and an MBA from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where he became a lifelong member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. John completed the Harvard Executive OPM Program. John met the love of his life, Rose Marie Salisbury of Harlingen, Texas while at SMU. They began their family in Dallas where they lived 20 years. They were married for 69 years.

John worked as a mortgage banker for Maxson-Mahoney-Turner for ten years. A dedicated entrepreneur at heart, he started his own company, Hendry Investments and developed retail shopping centers and apartments. In 1968, John relocated his young family to San Antonio, Texas where he continued building apartments and Lock-N-Key mini storage facilities in numerous states. His great attention to detail and market analysis, along with appreciation for quality, aesthetics, and ethical business practices enabled him to be a respected and successful businessman.

John was an avid collector of art. He enjoyed traveling the world with Rose Marie and shared that love with his children and their families. Tennis kept him active and you could often see him on the courts at the San Antonio Country Club. John and Rose Marie enjoyed attending tennis camps at T Bar M and in California. He was also a big fan of SMU, the Dallas Cowboys, and San Antonio Spurs. He kept up to date on current affairs.

John was an example to his family and lived a life true to his values: faithfulness to Rose Marie and his extended family; integrity, that his word could be counted on; strong work ethic, “do your homework” and do the best you can; and conviction, about what is important in life.

John is preceded in death by his sisters Margaret Dobson, Janet Brown, Patsy McCartney and brother Robert Hendry. He is survived by his wife, Rose Marie Hendry; children Stuart Hendry and wife Lee Anne of San Antonio, Texas, John L. Hendry IV and wife Elise Denise of College Station, Texas, Lynne Hendry of San Antonio, Texas and Gary Hendry and wife Tory of Boerne, Texas; grandchildren Emily Cage and husband William, Anna Hackfeld and husband Brady, Megan Hendry, Luke Hendry and wife Claudia, and Grace Hendry; great-grandchildren, Crawford Cage, Lyles Cage, James Cage, Harper Hackfeld and Hayes Hackfeld, and numerous nieces and nephews.
