Johnny Leane McElveen Obituary

Sumter, SC …. Johnny McElveen,73, passed away, April 23, 2022, at his home following a 3-year fight with Prostate Cancer. He was the widower of Mary Brown McElveen, whom he was married to for 52 years.

Born in Sumter, January 25, 1949, he was the son of the late Henry Tillman McElveen and the late Hazelene Stephens Sellers.  Johnny was a member of Bethesda Church of God for 20 plus years, where he proudly served as an usher. He worked at Korn Industries for many years. He was also employed with B.L. Montague, Asplundh Tree Service & Sumter County Public Works.  Johnny enjoyed wood working, paracord crafts and other various projects. His most favorite thing was making and giving wooden cross necklaces.  Prior to the decline of his health, he spent every weekday morning at McDonald’s drinking coffee with his friends. Since being outdoors was his favorite place to be, he would then spend the rest of the day tinkering and repairing lawn mowers and such. He loved helping and being of service to others.

Left to cherish his memories are three daughters and their husbands: Cyndi & Frankie Rodgers, Sarah & James Euten and Nancy & Michael Lindsay. Six grandchildren; Bryan McElveen, Zachary Rodgers, Allison Euten, Canyon, Olivia & Tillman Lindsay. Two great-grandsons; Jackson McElveen & Kellen Rodgers. A son; Christopher Belt along with his children and grandchildren. A brother; Ray Tillman (Bear) McElveen. A sister; Mary Poston. A special friend that will always be family; Pam Meyer. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, In-laws, and friends.

Proceeding Johnny in death were his two brothers; Junior and Paul McElveen, his sister; Patricia Byrd and a much-loved sister-in-law; Renee McElveen.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 10:00 am at Bethesda Church of God, 2730 Broad St., Sumter, with the Rev. Al Sims and Rev. Howard Owens officiating.
