Leroy James Schaapman, 58, of Quincy, Washington passed away Monday, April 18, 2022, at Quincy Valley Medical Center from heart failure.

Leroy was born October 22, 1963, in Ontario, California to John T. and Henrietta (Schoonhoven) Schaapman. He moved in January 1973 with his parents from Ripon, California to Quincy, Washington. He attended school in Quincy, Washington and graduated from Quincy High School in 1981. He briefly moved back to Modesto, California but returned to Quincy, Washington.

Leroy got his taste for mechanical work by working for Chet’s Honda in Quincy, Washington in the eighth grade and all thru high school, repairing small engines. He was a gifted master mechanic and fabricator. He could repair or build anything. He started working for Willow Drive Nursery in Ephrata Washington on July 27, 1994, until his passing. He previously worked for Van Groningen & Sons in Ripon, California as their head mechanic.

He had a passion for hunting, fishing, gardening, building items for his yard and BBQ’g. If there was an event that needed something BBQed, you would find Leroy at the BBQ. Leroy spent many years helping with mission work in Haiti at the Orphanage. He designed and fabricated their water tower. This is where he met his two youngest daughters Joceline and Dashka. Leroy attended Quincy First Assembly of God Church in Quincy, Washington. He enjoyed the fellowship of believers.

He is survived by his wife Sarah (Strong) Schaapman of Quincy, Washington, his six daughters Kyla, Cydney (Brandon) Priest, Mashayla, Samantha (Partner Jayr), Joceline, Dashka, two step-children Kyuss and Vanessa Ivie, one grandson Isaias, three sisters and one brother, Betha (Bud) Oostema of Modesto, California, Maryette Bender and Garnette Martin of Clarkston, Washington, and Larry (Julie) Schaapman of Quincy, Washington and multiple nephews, nieces, great and great-great nephews, nieces and several cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Arvin and Harvey Schaapman and sister Greta Johal.

Celebration of Life will be at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 7th, 2022, and held at Quincy Faith Community Church,
1005 10th Avenue SW, Quincy, WA.
