Darlene Carmon McKnight, one of four children born to David and India Northington Carmon entered into this world on February 19, 1942 in Salem, New Jersey. She peacefully transitioned into eternity on March 14, 2022 at her residence. She was formally educated in the Salem City School District. During Darlene’s lifetime she was employed at: Princeton Hospital as a lab tech, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Greg Simms, New Approach Reading Method, and Trenton Public Schools as a parent liaison professional. Darlene Carmon McKnight was a well-loved and respected activist of the City of Trenton for 55 years. Darlene did extensive work in the community with numerous agencies and advocacy groups to make Trenton a safer place for all adults and their children. When her daughter, Shelly, entered Kindergarten she became a parent volunteer, school representative, and a parent organizer always advocating for improvement in conditions impacting the Trenton children. By the time her son, Louis, started school she was well established as an “Advocate”. She fought to have advocacy training for parents/grandparents as partners to improve the educational and social success of their children in school.
