MARSHALL, JOHN LEO III

87, of Naples, Florida passed away in his home surrounded by his family on Monday, April 11, 2022.  Jack and Joananne shared a devoted, loving marriage which spanned almost 55 years and Joananne predeceased Jack in 2014.  Jack was an incredible husband, father, grandfather, friend, and mentor. 

 

He was a visionary, an entrepreneur, respected for his integrity, forthrightness, and leadership.  He always strived to win and his incredibly positive attitude was infectious.  He had a strong sense of confidence, yet was truly humble.  He loved his family dearly and is survived by his two children and five grandchildren, Lianne Marshall, her husband Rudy Glocker and their boys Thornton and Emmett Glocker and John Marshall, and his sons Jake, Nicholas and Connor Marshall. 

 

Jack was born September 1, 1934 to Anne and John Marshall in Pawtucket, RI.  Jack was the eldest of the three children and is survived by his sister, Ann Borah of Seekonk, MA.  He was the brother of the late Robert J. Marshall.  Jack was a graduate of Brown University and Harvard Business School.  He learned the construction business as he worked at J.L. Marshall & Sons and the real meaning of the four letter word – WORK. 

 

In 1963, Jack and Joananne founded Marshall Contractors, Inc (MCI).  As MCI's expertise and capabilities grew, they became a leading builder of microelectronics fabrication plants and biotechnology labs and one of the top 50 national construction companies.  Jack always stated the success of the business was a result of hiring the right people.  One thing he was most proud of was that MCI remained throughout the years a family-type business.  Jack loved the comradery of the employees going to sporting events, fishing outings, and a relationship of working ‘with’ someone rather than ‘for’ someone.  Jack enjoyed being surrounded by young people and asking them many questions.  MCI was sold to Fluor Daniel in 1996. 

 

Jack also dedicated his time and talents to several different organizations as he started the next chapter of his life…and he would have told you it was so exceptionally rewarding.  He served on the Board of Trustees at Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket.  He also worked with Meeting Street School, the RI Philharmonic, and Buttonhole.  Over the last few years, he worked with his dear friend John Lyden and started a first-generation scholarship fund with St. John’s University in Minnesota and was so proud of helping numerous hardworking young men from Immokalee, Florida receive a college education.

 

Jack became a Florida resident in 2014.  He loved the warm weather and all it had to offer.  He also met his companion Charlotta Anton who he shared the last seven years together travelling the world, connecting with old friends and meeting new ones along their journeys.  They shared a special relationship and he adored the time they spent together.

 

Jack was an exceptional businessman, leader and mentor to many people, but his family was what he truly cherished.  He loved playing golf, fishing with John and his grandsons and watching sports especially the Celtics.  He loved spending summers as a family and the community he shared at his home in Touisset Point.

 

His funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 19th at 9:00 a.m. from Manning Heffern Funeral Home, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 at St. Margaret’s Church, 1098 Pawtucket Avenue, Rumford.  The burial will follow at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.   Visiting hours will be Monday, April 18 from 4-7 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the ‘Rose Marie Lyden and Joananne Argus Marshall Scholarship Fund’ St. John’s University, Box 7222, Collegeville, MN  56321 or to the ‘Marshall Family Scholarship Fund’ at Meeting Street School, Attn: Development, 1000 Eddy Street, Providence, RI 02905.
