Obituary

Lorraine S. Novinski, age 78, of Morristown, NJ passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2022 at LIVIA Health & Senior Living in East Hanover, NJ.

She was born on July 7, 1943 in Long Island, NY.  She spent her childhood in Oakdale and later moved to Manhasset before she proceeded to live in various towns in NJ including Mahwah, Randolph, Bernardsville and Morristown.

She was the daughter of the late John and Muriel (Acker) Novinski.

Lorraine taught Mathematics and Statistics and then went back to school to earn her Law Degree from Berkeley University. In 1985, Lorraine, newly graduated from law school, was hired as a staff attorney with the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Health Care Financing Administration.  Thereafter, in approximately 1990, Lorraine was sworn in as an Assistant United States Attorney, Office of the United States Attorney, Southern District of New York, where she served with distinction until her retirement.

After her retirement, she enjoyed being a volunteer as a Tax Preparer for AARP.  She ran one center for AARP and assisted at a second facility.

She also taught at Literacy Volunteers.  One of her students was from Poland and thought so highly of Lorraine, when she returned to Poland, she invited Lorraine to visit her.  She was delighted to accept her invitation.

Lorraine loved nature.  She was a member of the NJ Audubon Society.  She was also a volunteer at the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge.  She also had a garden plot in Morristown which she enjoyed tending to.

She will always be remembered for her vivacious energy, her love for birdwatching, gardening mountain biking and traveling.  In her “spare” time, she would enjoy quilting and cross-stitch.

Survivors include many beloved friends including her childhood friend, Chickie Van Emmerik of Long Island, NY.

A celebration of Lorraine’s life will take place in New Jersey and Long Island at future dates.

Arrangements are under the direction of Scarponi-Bright Funeral Home in Lebanon, NJ.
