CHARLESTON, IL- Dorothy Ann Hoferer, 82, of Charleston, Illinois passed away Monday, April 4, 2022, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, Illinois.  A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday, April 7, 2022, at Adams Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until service time at the funeral chapel. Memorials in her honor may be made to the Coles County Animal Shelter and left at the visitation/service or mailed to Adams Funeral Chapel, 2330 Shawnee Drive, Charleston, IL  61920.                                                                   

Dorothy was born August 26, 1939, in Story City, Iowa to Millard and Alma (Mannes) Helland.

She was baptized and then confirmed in June 1954 at Bethany Lutheran Church in McCallsburg, IA. She graduated from McCallsburg Consolidated High School in May, 1957. She then attended Waldorf College to earn her Associates in Commerce degree. After graduating in May 1959, she worked for the Medical Records Department at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa for ten years.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Pastor Dean Hoferer on November 26, 1967 at Bethany Lutheran Church, McCallsburg, IA. Two sons, Kevin and David, were born to this union. In 1972 the family moved to Denver, IA, and Dorothy was a mother to her two young boys, helped her husband at church, and also earned a B.A. in Business from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, IA.

After moving to Cedar Rapids, IA, in 1978, Dorothy became one of two instructors when Hamilton Business College from Mason City, IA, opened a branch in Cedar Rapids. She taught medical secretarial courses. In the fall of 1989, she became an instructor and scheduling coordinator for Hamilton College in Des Moines, IA. She later became the Academic Dean of that college before retiring in October 2000.

Dorothy was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, Illinois, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa, and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Denver, Iowa. She enjoyed singing in the church choir and loved to play the piano and Lowrey organ. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, rubber stamping, crafting, and making cards. Dorothy had a passion and a love for doing family genealogy.

She is survived by her husband Dean; two sons, Kevin (Shellie) Hoferer of Charleston, Illinois, and David (Clarissa) Hoferer  of Sioux City, Iowa; and two grandchildren, Katrina and Jonathan Hoferer. She was preceded in death by her parents.
