Maurice Levy had his last marathon on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Sprenger Health Care, attended by Hospice Care of the Lowcountry.

He arrived on August 15, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois to his parents Eugene and Jean who predeceased him. His former wife, Loris Belle Rissman died after fifty years of marriage in 2005.They have three children, Arden Lynn Levy, MD (Mark Lurey) of Spartanburg, SC, Andrea Hilary Levy, MD of Madison, WI, and James Michael Levy, JD (Denise) of Santa Rosa Beach, FL. Maury's greatest pride and achievement was his children. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry, who resides in California. Maury and his wife, Michele Kamet, shared sixteen years together along with their pets, Weezie and Jake, enjoying a wonderful life at the beach, reading, doing crosswords, shopping and dining with friends. In addition, he is survived by his sister and brother in law, Beverly and Al Taylor of Bluffton and stepson, William (Joyce) and step grandchildren, Sydney and Michael of Dallas, TX, who cherished their Poppy, too.

Maury had many friends, colleagues and neighbors who loved him.  He was a living legend and was honored personally and professionally.  He was a man of many talents, a devoted husband, dedicated father, loyal friend, marathon runner for over 40 years, a published poet, medical author and educator. He served for two years in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958.

Dr. Levy received his Doctorate of Education from the University of Georgia in 1968 and completed a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Research in Medical Education from The University of Southern California in 1970. Maury spent the majority of his career at The Medical College of Georgia, except for a few assignments, one as an appointed Advisor of the Division of Medicine in the Department of Health, Education and Welfare in Washington DC. He was a Professor of Medical Education in Pediatrics, Associate Dean for Faculty Development and co-founder of The Prevention Institute at MCG with his best friend, Dr. William Strong, a world renowned pediatric cardiologist. Maury served as a manuscript reviewer, editor of medical and biomedical publications as well as an author and coauthor of dozens of publications. He was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society in Education and Phi Delta Kappa, Education Honorary. He received awards of excellence from The American Academy of Pediatrics. He has been listed in Leaders in Education, Dictionary of International Biography and mentioned in numerous Who's Who in Education and Medical books.

The Medical College of Georgia gave Dr. Levy the "Outstanding Faculty Award" for General Programs Faculty in 1985 and the Distinguished Faculty Award for Institutional Service in 1993. One of his favorite honors was to be acknowledged for his service to the Prevention Institute in 2012. Maury served on many boards, receiving awards from The American Heart Association and lifetime honorary members of SAPA, Society of Army Physicians Assistants. He was also on regional American Heart Association and The American Red Cross boards.

Maury would encourage all who knew him to hug their loved ones and pets a little more.

A special thanks to family, friends, and the medical professionals, especially Dr. Patrick Jordan, personal physician, for his care; also celebrants, Rabbi Brad Bloom of Congregational Beth Yam and Rev. Therese Lee of Unity Spiritual Center, who have given the family spiritual care.

Graveside services will be private. A celebration of Maury’s life will be scheduled at a later date.
