Obituary

Douglas Craig Roberts, age 79, of 448 Mockingbird Road, Abbeville, died Saturday, April 2, 2022, at Willson Hospice House in Albany.

Born in Fort Valley, he was the son of the late H. E. Roberts and Reuviel Newman Roberts.  After a legendary career as a linebacker for the Fitzgerald Hurricanes, he graduated in 1962 and married his high school sweetheart, Diann Taylor in 1966.  The first mail he received as a married man was a draft notice.  He served in the United States Army in Germany from 1966 until 1968 and brought back a lifetime of Army hijinks to share.

From the time he climbed on a bulldozer at 8 years old, he always had something going on.  He was a man of many talents.  Along with being a heavy equipment operator, he was a beef cattle farmer, owned Soggy Bottoms ATV Park and anything else he put his mind to.

Douglas loved to "hold court" and regale anybody that wanted to drop by with fascinating tales.  He will be missed by many. There was nothing he couldn't talk about and had one of the best memories for remembering names and details.  One could say he was legendary.

He is survived by his granddaughters, Kristina Roberts and Bridgette Roberts of Uriah, AL; a niece, Dana Roberts Adkins (Bobby) of Macon; a close personal friend of many years, Amanda Dennard (Kevin).

He was preceded in death by his wife, Diann Taylor Roberts; his son, Douglas Craig Roberts, Jr.; his brother, Ronald Roberts.

Funeral services will be private.

Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Vienna has charge of arrangements.
