Mary Anne Copher Obituary

Mary Anne Copher, 86, of Fayetteville passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2022, at Hope Mills Retirement Home.

Mary Anne was born on August 26, 1935, in Cumberland County to the late Deberry and Viola Buchanan of Massey Hill.

She graduated from Massey Hill High School around 1953 and went to work at the cotton mill on Cumberland Road after graduating. She also worked at the diner downtown Fayetteville until she was offered a job at the Fayetteville Observer.

After 13 years with the Fayetteville Observer, she met and married the love of her life, Thomas Copher, who at that time was Distribution Director. They had a long, wonderful marriage for over 40 years.

Mrs. Copher was a member of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church for over 40 years. She attended Caroline Owens Bible Study Group for several years. She loved studying the Bible and preparing for gatherings to discuss the Bible.

She was a member of the Briarwood Garden Club. She and Tom were members of Green Valley Country Club until its closing and then joined Gates Four Country Club.

Her many loves in her life were spending time with her family, friends, and neighbors, especially on her back porch.

She loved taking train trips to New York City with family and friends. She attended and hosted bridge club parties regularly.  She participated in water aerobics at Eutaw Spa for over 30 years. She loved her many cats, hers and her neighbors plus whatever strays showed up.

In December 2018, after a stroke, Hope Mills Retirement Center became her home where she was greatly loved and cared for by a wonderful staff until her passing.

She was one wonderful, sweet lady and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Lafayette Memorial Park.

She was preceded in death by her parents, spouse and several siblings.

She is survived by her stepson, Kenneth S. Wood and wife Carol; grandchildren, Keneen Culbreth and husband Mark, Katrina Jones and husband Mitch; great granddaughter, Madison Culbreth; siblings, Betty Gaylord, Edna Goodrich, Dorothy Canipe, Melton Buchanan, and John Buchanan.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.
