Adam Petryshyn Obituary

Adam passed away on March 22, 2022, in the city of Kelowna, BC. He is survived by his sister Leslie (Elsie)Tanner, daughter Karen (Dan), son Bill (Nicole), grandchildren Jessica, Adam, and Shelby, his two great grandchildren, Delilah and Teal as well as numerous nieces and nephews spread out over Canada and the U.S. He was predeceased by his wife Ida in 2009, parents Hnat and Anastasia, brother Michael, sisters Rose and Mary, son Richard in 1996 and daughter April in 1999. Adam was grateful to have reached the ripe old age of 100 in February and saw the world change drastically over the course of his long and full life. He was born in Hafford, Saskatchewan on February 8, 1922, and in his early years he worked alongside his father and brothers on the family farm. Along with his siblings, he travelled 4 miles by horse and buggy or sleigh to school. He had many stories of his mother feeding needy people that passed by the farm during the depression. After leaving the family farm he spent time in Edmonton, Outpost Island and Prince Rupert, eventually working in a shipyard to help build Victory ships during the early years of WW11. When he was old enough, he joined the Royal Canadian Airforce as a mid-upper gunman and spent 3 years overseas based out of Yorkshire, England. After the war he completed high school and attended Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario pursuing a degree in Engineering. He met his future wife Ida in Kingston and together they moved to Sudbury, Ontario where they welcomed their 4 children Rick, Karen, April, and Bill. Adam worked in Sudbury for 32 years at INCO as a Ventilation Engineer and Safety Officer. He was an avid artist and held a joint art exhibition with his daughter April in the 1970’s. He also was an accomplished public speaker with Toastmasters for many years and taught public speaking at night school. After retirement, Adam and Ida divided their time between their cottage in northern Ontario and St. Petersburg, Florida where they purchased a home and spent many happy years with their golfing buddies. Eventually, they sold the cottage in Ontario and moved west to Kelowna where they enjoyed the milder weather and longer growing season for the huge garden that Adam tended every year. Still going south in the winter, they spent happy times in Arizona and California during the winters and made many good friends. A family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial tributes in his name can be made to the MS Society of Canada (www.mssociety.ca). Arrangements are in the care of Everden Rust Funeral Services & Crematorium, West Kelowna Arrangement Centre (250-768-8925). Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.everdenrust.com.
