She attended Sioux Center Christian School through the Eighth grade and went on to Sioux Center High School where she graduated in 1964. Carol worked for her father and mother at Casey’s Bakery in Sioux Center through her high school years. She married Dennis Keith De Jong from Sheldon on June 3, 1965 at the First Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Carol worked at Hollanders Five and Dime in Sheldon in her early married years. After having children, she stayed at home to raise their family and worked part time in her home, doing bookkeeping for her husband’s Sears Appliance and Catalog Store for 24 years. After her children left the home, she worked at Douglas Communications in bookkeeping for several years. Later she went back to her family’s business, Casey’s Bakery, and worked in accounts payable until she retired. Carol loved to bake, cook and clean for her family. She also enjoyed painting, refinishing furniture, golfing and having coffee with her lady friends. She was a grandma that always had a bag of donuts each time she went to see any of her grandkids. Often, they would take trips to the Sugar Shack candy store. Carol loved to spend time at Okoboji with Denny, her kids and grandkids. If you didn’t find her there, she was most likely shopping! Carol struggled her last 14 years with many health issues. Highlighted in her Bible and in her heart was Psalm 73:26, “My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.” Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 56 years, Dennis, 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Jackie De Jong of Sheldon, Michael and Jenna De Jong of Sioux Center, 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Tammy and Marc Ellwein of Sioux Falls, Kim and Scott Groeneweg of Orange City, 14 grandchildren, Joseph and Melanie De Jong and their 3 children; Jacob and Kelsie De Jong; Cori De Jong; Lauren Ellwein; Lindsey Ellwein and her fiancé, Hunter McDonald; Brady and Makayla Groeneweg; Dylan Groeneweg; Faythe Groeneweg; Tait Groeneweg; Maxwell De Jong; Elah Brouwer; Demi De Jong; Luca De Jong and Leo De Jong; 3 sisters, Mary Swets of Sioux Center, Velma Franken of Sioux Center, Judy and Roy Vander Meulen of Sioux Falls, 1 brother, Ron and Kathy De Groot of Sioux Center.
