Horst J. Vogel Obituary

Horst lived a full life and died on his hill in Stanfordville, NY on March 17, 2022. He was born in Aalen, Germany on August 16,1942. His parents were Ulrich and Anna Vogel. They immigrated as a family to The United States in 1955. After traveling to Kansas, they moved back to New York and settled in Brentwood, Long Island. Horst attended Brentwood High School where he met and fell in love with the love of his life, Winnie. He was a Long Island Champion in the Breaststroke earning him a full scholarship to Rutgers University.

Horst eventually transferred to the College at Brockport to be with Winnie, where he graduated in 1964 with a B.S. in Physical Education. Horst started his teaching career in Brentwood but eventually moved north to Stanfordville. This is where Horst and Winnie started their family and the World-Famous High Chateau St. Bernard Kennel.  Horst starting teaching in the Arlington School District after the move to Stanfordville where he had a 33-year teaching career retiring in 1997.

While teaching, Horst and Winnie traveled the country with their award-winning St Bernards. Breeding and showing the dogs was his passion. His drive to have the best St. Bernards was fueled by his quest for knowledge about the breed. This passion led Horst to become world renowned for his knowledge and the dogs he bred.  He later became a judge and traveled the world. Later in life he realized a childhood dream and became the proud owner of 2 Percheron Draft Horses; Smoke and Major. He was an avid artist and would sit and construct dioramas of horses hitched to everything from logs to beer wagons.  He was a serious antique collector and would often be seen traveling around to flea markets and yard sales.

Horst is survived by his wife Winnie, his brother Siegfried, his two children Debbie and Eric (Becky). He was blessed with 6 grandchildren Sarah, Rachel and Matthew Beam, and MacKenna, Callen and Trevor Vogel.
