"Bertie" Monroe Charlotte Roberta "Bertie" Monroe, 93, of Williamstown, passed away, Friday April 15, 2016 at Harmar Place in Marietta, surrounded by family and friends. She was born September 19, 1922 in Parkersburg, daughter of the late Ernest W. and Talma Chichester Wiggins. Bertie's greatest accomplishments were raising her family and working the family farm where she could enjoy nature and animals, two of her favorite things. She lived on the farm for sixty-six of her ninety-three years. She loved spending time with family, friends and neighbors and was known to many as "Mom Monroe". She enjoyed gardening, sewing and crafts. She was a member of the Burnt Hill United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Farm Bureau. Bertie was active for many years in the Wood County Extension Homemakers and held many positions, including the County and State Treasurer. She represented the Extension Homemakers as the County Belle at the Folk Festival in Glenville in 1993, a position also held by her mother. She was a member of the Burnt Hill Homemakers until it disbanded and then was welcomed as a member of the Vienna CEOS. She traveled to many states over the years, attending National Extension Homemakers conventions with her special homemaker friends. Bertie is survived by one son Robert Monroe of Williamstown, WV, two daughters Charlotte Copeland (Roger) of Akron, Oh and Shelia Monroe of Parkersburg, WV, five grandchildren, two step grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren, one sister Eleanor Garrett and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Bertie was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, Wilmer Monroe, Sr. in May 1991, her oldest son Wilmer W. Monroe, Jr., four brothers and three sisters. The funeral service will be 1:00 pm Tuesday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg with Pastor Ed Lowe officiating. Burial will be at the Burnt Hill Cemetery in Williamstown. Visitation will be from 5 - 8 on Monday and for one hour prior to the service on Tuesday. The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Harmar Place for the love and wonderful care they provided to Bertie over the last few months.
