Lena Ruth Polliard February 5,1936 – March 11, 2022 Lena Ruth Polliard passed away peacefully with family at her side on March 11, 2022. She passed after suffering the effects of a stroke, and she lived with Alzheimer’s disease for many years prior. She was born in Santo Tomas, New Mexico to Cyrus and Pauline Matkin. The second of three daughters, she grew up in Las Cruces, NM before moving east to live in Miami and Cocoa Beach, FL where she met and married her husband, James, an Air Force officer at the time. Ruth and James have two children together, James Jr. and Jason. She is preceded in death by her daughter, Valerie Hood, her mother (Pauline) and father (Cyrus), and her younger sister, Barbara. She is survived by her husband, her two sons, her grandson, Cameron Hood, and two great-grandsons, Noah and Rykar Hood. After her husband served tours in Florida, California, and Colorado, Ruth and her family settled in Aurora, CO where she lived for nearly five decades. She enjoyed many activities and had a love of learning. Among her many interests, she enjoyed trail building with the Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado, and she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, for which she served as Regent of the Colorado Chapter for six years. She also pursued a degree in Anthropology from the University of Colorado, Denver, completing coursework into her senior year before the effects of Alzheimer’s robbed her ability to complete her degree. Ruth spent her final years in long-term care in a skilled nursing facility. Family services are planned for a future date and will be held in New Mexico. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
