Alma Anita Hostetler, 104, of Washington, DC, died Monday afternoon, March 14, 2022 at Forest Hills of DC Inclusive Senior Living in Washington, DC.
She was born August 27, 1917, a daughter of John J. and Clara (Yoder) Hostetler. She was the second youngest of eight children, having been born on an Amish farm in Chouteau, OK, where she grew up speaking Pennsylvania German. She left the farm to attend Salt City Business College in Hutchinson, KS. In 1942 she joined thousands of women who heeded the government’s call to support the war effort, following her sister, Elizabeth, to Washington, DC. Her first job was at the Office of Price Administration, which set prices for goods that were in short supply. She joined the office of Senator Warren Magnuson (D-WA) in the mid 1950s, working as his personal secretary for twenty-seven years.
Alma was an active member of the social sorority, Beta Sigma Phi (“life learning and friendship”) and played a weekly bridge game at the Women’s Democratic Club – until she was one-hundred years old – talking the bus after she gave up her car. In her retirement she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and spent twenty-seven years at the Traveler’s Aid desk at the National Airport. She loved classical music, theater, her adoring kitty and hosting friends and family at her condo in the Ontario in Adams Morgan, where she lived for fifty-five years. Alma attributed her longevity to her lifelong yoga practice and an occasional glass of chardonnay.
