Gerald Hinton Wood Obituary

Gerald Hinton Wood, 89 of Madison, passed away on March 11, 2022 with his wife of 66 years, Nancy Jean Hester Wood, by his side.  Gerald was born December 2, 1932 in Raleigh, NC to Jackson Hinton and Thelma Medlin Wood.  He served in the United States Army two years, and in 1959 graduated from North Carolina State with a degree in Education. He began his career the next day with the U.S Public Health Service while continuing post graduate education at the University of Georgia.  Gerald specifically worked with the Centers for Disease Control, where he retired in 1982, as Assistant Chief of Field Services.  He was a master builder and built their home, The Crabapple Cottage, in Madison.  He devoted his entire life to the Lord with mission trips in the U.S. and abroad.  For 14 years, he visited juvenile detention centers.  He was also active in a food ministry, served as a true deacon, taught Sunday School classes, hosted home Bible studies, and served local Laotion refugees.  He drove busses for countless church choir tours and mission trips, assisted those along the roadways in distress, and never ceases being a protector and servant. He loved trips to the store, often multiple times a day.  This, in service to his wife, but more importantly, it created opportunities to tell people about his Savior of 79 years, Jesus Christ.  He prayed daily over his beloved family of 68 and at times made sure to lay hands on them individually, praying a special blessing.  He never shamed anyone, but also expected the best from them.  As a father, he corrected but never revisited.  He left a godly heritage and he finished strong.

Gerald Wood is survived by his wife, Jean and their three daughters, Delia Norton (Jeff), Jerri Morris (Hugh) and Maria Lane (Dan).  Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a sister, Nell Summey .

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 16, from 1-3 PM at A.E. Carter Funeral Home.  The funeral service will be held at 3 PM in the chapel.  Interment will take place later at New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in Raleigh, NC.

Memorials may be made to Lake Point Community Church Building Fund.
