Obituary

Vincent Jones Pike

August 26, 1942 – March 1, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family of Vincent Jones (Vince, Vin, Vinny) Pike announces his peaceful passing at his home, in the presence of his loving wife, in St. John’s on March 1, 2022, at the age of 79.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Violet (Vi) Pike of Grand Falls-Windsor, and parents-in-law, Richard (Dick) and Mildred Bonnell of St. John’s. Leaving to mourn with fond and loving memories are his wife Florence (Bonnell) Pike, daughter Dr. Pamela D. Pike, son-in-law Stephen Binz of Baton Rouge, LA, special cousin “Margie” (Guy) Penney, and a large circle of family and friends in Canada and the United States.

Upon graduation from Grand Falls Academy, Vince attended Acadia University earning a B. Comm. in 1964. In 1970, he earned a CMA certification and later the CPA designation. In 1966, he married Florence and remained a devoted husband and loving, supportive, and proud father throughout his life.

During his undergraduate years, Vince was a valued member of the Acadia Axemen Hockey Team; he remained a lifelong supporter of Acadia. His love of sports and commitment to the team, nurtured by his parents, also enabled him to represent Newfoundland at a national curling championship while in high school. Throughout adulthood, he participated in curling, hockey, and softball; he golfed through the summer of 2021.

Vince began his career in private enterprise before moving to the Federal Government in the early 70s, where he worked in management for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and its precursors, until his retirement. In 1983, he was the only member east of Montreal chosen to be part of a Canadian delegation of management accountants who, at the invitation of the Chinese Government, spent three weeks visiting universities, hospitals, and government entities in the People’s Republic of China. He was Past-President of the Society of Management Accountants of Newfoundland and served on numerous provincial and national committees of the Society for many years.

Outside of work and family, he believed in helping others. He devoted a significant amount of time to local, provincial, national, and international service throughout his life and was loved and respected by all. During his younger years, he spent many winters coaching boys hockey. He was active in the St. James United Church community, serving on the Board and the Finance Committee. He sat on the Board of the Masonic Park Nursing Home and the Agnes Pratt Nursing Home. He volunteered with the NewTel Pioneers later in life, working for Kids Eat Smart, the Health Care Foundation, and the Kidney Foundation.

He devoted most of his time and energy to being a Mason and Shriner—living the brotherly ideals, making friendships across North America, and serving humbly in numerous leadership positions. He was a Past Master of the Avalon Lodge, Past Master of the First Colony Lodge of Installed Masters, Past Potentate of the Mazol Shriners of Newfoundland, longtime Treasurer of Mazol Shriners, and Past President of the Shrine Treasurers Association of North America. He was active in the Mazol Shriners Oriental Band and Jesters and volunteered for decades on a St. John’s Shrine Club Bingo team.

Upon retirement, Vince and Florence spent winters in Tucson, Arizona, where he enjoyed golfing, participating in RV Club excursions, and he served on the Finance Committee of the Tucson Estates Property Owners Association and was treasurer of the Tucson Estates Canada Club. While his loss is profound to those who loved him, Vince will be remembered for his compassion, kindness, strong principles, and graciousness.

The family wishes to take this opportunity to express heartfelt thanks to those who enriched Vince’s life daily during the past year. We extend heartfelt gratitude to Greg and Doreen Stokes; Jim and Joanne Dwyer; Jim and Mary Nelson; Roberta Wells; and Dr. Shree Mulay.

For meals and visits, in addition to the aforementioned, we thank Guy and Margaret Penney; Jeff and Elizabeth Churchill; Guy and Valerie Penney; Kevin and Molly Stacey; Madonna Barnes; Baxter and Vi Vincent; Roy Sandland; Bill and Sylvia Walsh; Mike and Doreen Bouzane; Mildred Pretty; Ed Branton and Rose Coveyduck; Melissa Branton; Tina Street Bennett; Edna Bennett; Jean and Debbie Fletcher; Herman Starkes; Melissa, Felix, and Ava Rogers; and SPCA Thrift Store West staff and volunteers. Florence and Pamela wish to thank Canadian and American friends in Arizona who have kept in touch throughout the pandemic; their concern and support is appreciated and will always be remembered. Thanks to friends who drove Vince to and from golf: Pat Ryall; Dave Barrett; Kevin Stacey; Sheridan Yetman. The family extends a special thank you to Roy Sandland and first responders: Brookfield Fire Station, RNC, and the senior team of paramedics; special thank you to Denise and Leslie.

A service celebrating Vince’s life will be held on Thursday, June 30th 2022 at 11:00am from St. James United Church. Donations in Vince’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choosing.
