Anna L. Scanlon Obituary

Anna L. (Vercelli) Scanlon, age 101, of Monroeville most of her life, passed away on Saturday, January 2, 2022 in Richmond, VA. Beloved wife of the late Walter Joseph Scanlon; loving mother of Louise (James) Hajas, Sandra (Edward) Evers, Patricia (Dale) Weaver and Robert (Ilona) Scanlon; cherished grandmother of Ian (Shuchi) Nalepa, Ron (Julie) Weaver, Tiffany (Derek) Nolan, Amy (Michael) Shields, Audrey (Erik) Gavula, Jacob (Jayne) Scanlon and Kelsey (Gabor) Szigeti-Scanlon. Anna is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, Michele and Luigia (Gallina) Vercelli; and siblings, John Vercelli, Mary Knapp, Gulyerma Krenn, Gustine Krenn, Felix Vercelli, Corinne Benes and Charles Vercelli. Anna grew up on the family farm in what was then Patton Township (later Monroeville), then settled nearby on McGinley Road, after marrying Walter, to raise their family. This pastoral setting was the ideal canvas for Anna’s lifelong hobby of creating breath-taking floral designs and landscapes around her home. She and her husband also tended their impressive organic vegetable gardens and berry orchard, to the culinary delight of their family as well as any summer visitor lucky enough to depart with a generous basket of fresh grown bounty. Anna was a founding member of North American Martyrs Catholic Church, Monroeville, where she worshipped. Anna exemplified a strong work ethic throughout her lifetime; first on the family farm, then in an appliance factory during WWII, then later as a homemaker along with various babysitting and domestic jobs until she was over 80 years old. In her senior years, Sunday nights usually found her at #4 Firehall enjoying bingo. Another place that Anna could often be found was at the Public Library attending the Monroeville Senior Citizen’s Club meetings or participating in their group travels.  She loved traveling with friends and family alike, adventuring to locations both domestic and abroad. Friends and family will be received for a memorial visitation on Sunday, March 27, 2022, from 1 - 4 PM at the JOBE FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, INC. (MONROEVILLE/PLUM CHAPEL) 445 Beatty Road, Monroeville (412-856-4747). Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, March 28, 2022 at 11 AM at Christ the Divine Shepherd Parish at St. Bernadette Church. Inurnment will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. Wishing to honor Anna's lifelong love of flowers and gardening, memorial donations may be made to Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens at One Shenley Park, Pittsburgh, PA 15212-3830.
