With profound sadness, we announce the loss of Dr. Oscar R. Weiss of Poughkeepsie, NY. Oscar passed away in Sarasota, FL, on Friday, March 4, 2022, while enjoying the winter with his beloved wife Evy. Oscar was a highly respected, honorable, and reliable man of dignity, strength, and keen humor. He was a magnificent planner and organizer, could map out any route long before navigation, and was an avid reader. He enjoyed a long swim, a quiet walk, a good round of golf, and being with the people he loved. He was blessed with many wonderful friends and colleagues.

Oscar was born to loving parents, Dr. Andor and Sylvia Weiss, on November 21, 1944. In his early life, his father served as a physician in the US Army during World War II. Oscar grew up in an observant Jewish home together with his sisters Judy and Cathy. He was raised in the Bronx and spent many afternoons in the outfield bleachers at Yankee Stadium, watching Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris chase down fly balls.

Oscar had a brilliant mind and a lifelong love of learning, which was nurtured at The Ramaz School and City College of New York. Following in the footsteps of his father and uncle, he attended the University of Mississippi Medical School, where he graduated with his MD in 1969. He knew that his calling was to be a pediatrician, and he completed his internship, residency and chief residency at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, with rotations at Bellevue Hospital and Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. He became a Major in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War as Chief of Pediatrics at Loring Air Force Base in Northern Maine from 1972-1974. After his honorable discharge, Oscar had a distinguished career from 1974-2015 as a pediatrician, partner and vice president at the Mid-Hudson Medical Group / CareMount Medical in Fishkill, NY. He also served as the Director of Pediatrics at Vassar Brothers Hospital for many years. Oscar loved being a pediatrician and was dedicated to providing his patients and the residents of Dutchess County with the highest level of care. His business acumen and ethical practices were instrumental in helping to grow the group from a handful of doctors to a practice of several hundred. He was also one of the founding partners and served as secretary of Medicus, an emergency walk-in center that was decades ahead of its time, and was a president of the Mid-Hudson Pediatric Society and a vice president of the Mid-Hudson Hebrew Day School. Oscar was humbled and honored to be recognized by his peers as an honoree at the Vassar Brothers Hospital gala in 2003.

Oscar met Evelyn Arfa at Camp Massad Bet, a Hebrew-speaking camp in the Poconos, where they worked together as counselors. Oscar knew that he wanted to spend his life with Evy, and they were married on Thanksgiving Eve in 1969 and enjoyed more than 52 years of extraordinary love and partnership. They raised two sons, Daniel and Stephen, in a Jewish home filled with love, respect, community service, charity, and a deep commitment to education. He and Evy enjoyed traveling the world together, taking special trips with family and friends, walking the rail trails, going to concerts and the theater, and taking a wide range of classes together. They loved hosting large gatherings of family and friends for Thanksgiving, Passover seders, and weekend afternoons by the pool.

Oscar was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Andor and Sylvia Weiss, and his in-laws, Morris and Gertrude Arfa, in addition to many loving aunts and uncles. He leaves behind his beloved wife Evelyn, in addition to his sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Daniel and Danielle Weiss, and Stephen Weiss and Casey Kait; his sisters and siblings-in-law, Judy (Yehuda) Peretz, Cathy (Dr. Eliot) Folickman, Harvey (the late Barbara and companion Heni Schwartz) Arfa, Dr. Kenneth (Judy) Arfa, and Rabbi Dovid (Fradie) Arfa. He loved all of his many nieces, nephews, and cousins and was proud of all of them.

Oscar's greatest joy was watching his cherished grandchildren grow, and he took pleasure in being an active part in all of their lives. He was immensely proud of them and there were no limits to what he did as their "Baba." The highlight of every year was taking them on vacation each summer. His legacy continues through Michael, Zipporah, Andrew, Jonah, and Samuel.

The funeral will be held at Temple Beth-El in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Wednesday, March 9, at 10:30AM, followed by burial at Temple Beth-El Cemetery. Shiva will begin at the home following the burial. In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to a meaningful charity of your choice.
