Martha Vetterl Obituary

Martha Louise Vetterl, 97, of Wall (formerly of Eatontown), passed away peacefully on February 21, 2022. Martha was born May 23, 1924 in Shelby, NC. Predeceased by parents Lawrence and Essie Lee; step-father Robert Capps, and her daughter Penelope.

She is survived by her sons Mark (wife Susan); Lee (wife Diane); sister Rebecca Arthur, nieces Donna Lisa, Ginger and Fran of NC. Grandchildren Christine (Brad) children Brent, Devon; Richard (Chrissy) children Dylan, Derek, Tyler; Katelyn (Chad) children Logan, Olivia, Natalie, Jacob. She was known by all as Martha or Mom Mom. She enjoyed her family and cherished friends. If you knew Martha you knew her Southern Hospitality. You couldn’t go into her home without her offering food, drink and a “Lord Have Mercy”.

She loved her little yellow Volkswagen, when you saw it coming you knew it was Martha.
Martha graduated Lattimore HS, NC, in 1942 and came North at age 17. She worked for the War Department as a Radio Engineering Aide in the Signal Corps; trained at Fort Monmouth and assigned to Detroit, MI Signal Laboratory. Later Martha worked at the Singer Sewing Store in Eatontown from 9am-5pm and then as a waitress from 5:30pm to approximately 2:30am at the Squires Pub in West Long Branch for over 35 years until retirement.

Martha was as “extra” in the movie The Pope of Greenwich Village. If you look closely she’s coming down the escalator at Monmouth Race Track. Her net pay was $34.97! In addition, she had a Monmouth Race Track horse named after her, Marvelous Martha, by Basil Plasteras, then owner of the Squires Pub.
You could spot Martha with her friend Gloria at Burger King’s Bouncy Hut watching her great-grandson play.

Martha loved being involved in her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s lives. Each having special memories with Mom Mom that are theirs alone. She was quick to smile and have a good time.
To remember Martha (Mom Mom) is to remember warmth and open arms.

Friends and family may visit on Sunday February 27th, 2-5pm at the Braun Funeral Home, 106 Broad St. Eatontown, NJ. A funeral home Service will take place on Monday February 28th, 10:30am followed by Burial at Monmouth Memorial Park, Rt33 in Tinton Falls.
