Sonny Obituary
Nathan (Sonny) Cooper Jr. of North Chicago, Illinois was born in Jackson, Mississippi to Nathan and Mamie (Hankins) Cooper June 10, 1929. Sonny grew up in Jackson, Mississippi and transitioned at the Captain Lovell Veterans Administration Medical Center in North Chicago, Illinois at the age of 92. Sonny was the first of seven children born to Nathan and Mamie Cooper. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age while attending Mt Nebo Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. He attended First Baptist Church in North Chicago under the leadership of Pastor Lee Maxey.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in February 1954. Soon after his discharge from the U.S. Army he began a career in construction at Fort Sheridan, IL where he worked until his retirement.
He was well respected and trained numerous people who went on the have successful career. He was a loving father of two daughters Terry and Linda. He was married to Olivia Cooper whom he remained good friends with until his passing. He loved cooking, his specialty was gumbo. He was a passionate jazz music lover and frequented weekend blues music concerts with his wife Olivia. He also shared his love a Jazz with many of his nephews and nieces.
He is preceded in death by his daughter Terry Lindsey, brothers James and Frank Cooper, his sisters Rosie Minter, and Mamie Miller. He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Linda Lindsey, his sisters Vinnie Medina of North Chicago, IL, and Bettie (William) Johnson of Waukegan IL, sister-in-law, Doris Cooper of Chicago IL, many nephews, nieces, and good friend Jessie Blackman.
