Charles Melad Simon Obituary

Simon, Charles "Melay", age 91, a resident of Traverse St., in the Fox Point section of Providence, for 72 years, died May 8, 2012 at RI Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Louise (Medeiros) Simon. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Charles and Anne (Daboul) Simon. Charles attended Hope High School where he was a member of the 1939 All-State Basketball Team. After graduation he attended Massanutten Military Academy in VA. He attended Holy Cross College in Worcester until answering the call of his country. He proudly served in WWII as a soldier in General Patton's 95th Infantry Division. Upon returning from the war, he married his sweetheart Louise. They were married for 61 years. Charles tried his hand at various businesses. He opened a bar on South Main Street and later a bowling alley called Sunshine Lanes. It was here he began the Fox Point League which is still an active league. He became the activities director at Bradley Hospital for 27 years. He became an assistant Jury Commissioner for the Superior Court for 10 years. He worked in the box office at the Providence Civic Center for thirty years. Throughout his life he was an active member of the Fox Point Boy's Club earning the lifetime award of "Mr. Boys Club". During the 1960's he formed a grassroots neighborhood organization that successfully fought the redevelopment plans for the neighborhood. Charles spent many summers from childhood to adulthood on Martha's Vineyard in the town of Oak Bluffs. He considered the island his home away from home. Charles greatest love was for his family. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Besides his wife he leaves his loving daughter Luanne Simon of East Providence. He was the brother of the late John C. Simon and Elizabeth Abdella. His funeral will begin on Friday at 11 am from the REBELLO FUNERAL HOME, 901 Broadway, East Providence, RI. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 Noon in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Traverse St., Providence. Burial with Military Honors will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling Hours will be TODAY, THURSDAY from 5-8 pm. In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to Fox Point Boys and Girls Club Alumni Assoc., PO Box 14026, East Providence, RI 02914
