Robert B. Hall Obituary

Bob Hall, aged 85, beloved husband of Beverly (Robinson) Hall, passed away peacefully at his home in Stratham, on January 28 following a battle with cancer. Robert Bailey Hall, son of Vernon Howland Hall II and Esther Bailey Hall, was born October 11, 1931. He grew up in Newton and Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. Bob was in the U.S. Air Force for two years and graduated from UNH in 1956 with a Bachelor's degree in Business. Hockey was Bob's earliest love. He played avidly on ponds and outdoor rinks up through high school, and was awarded a hockey scholarship to Boston College. Instead, Bob enrolled at UNH where he played first string for the Wildcats as "the smallest defenseman in the world" for the four years he attended. Following graduation, he settled in Exeter. Here he met other hockey enthusiasts interested in passing along their love of the sport to youngsters. Together they founded the Exeter Youth Hockey program. In the 1970's Bob noted an unfulfilled need for instruction and coaching for area girls interested in hockey and so became instrumental in founding the girls youth hockey program. Bob and Beverly were UNH Hockey season ticket holders for years and enjoyed enthusiastically cheering the Wildcats at every home game. Later in life, Bob discovered sailing. He and Beverly shared great adventures aboard their first and subsequent boats as they sailed Great Bay and the coast of Maine as far as Boothbay. Some of his happiest days were out on the water with his "Mate" simply messing about in boats. Following retirement from GTE where he was a sales engineer for 25+ years, Bob re-discovered golf. He and Bev loved golfing together and with their friends and family. Bob's second, and most rewarding career was as a marshall at the Breakfast Hill Golf Course. His affection for his co-workers and customers and enthusiasm for the job made every day of work a pleasure. Bob was also very active in later years as a Pease Greeter, a volunteer organization that meets and thanks returning and deploying troops as their flights change air crews in Newington. Regardless of the time of day or night the flight came through, he and Bev and their fellow greeters could be found lining up to shake hands and enthusiastically show appreciation for our troops. Bob's other passions were fly fishing, tennis, and eating ice cream at the beach with Beverly. Bob was predeceased by his first wife Lois (Bennett) Hall, who passed away in 1976, and brother Vernon, in 2016. In addition to Beverly, Bob is survived by his son Bobby and his wife Gwen of Cumberland, ME; daughter Linzee and her husband Steve Mahar of Portsmouth, his step-daughters Dawn and her husband Brian Marick of Champaign, IL, and Diana Morin of Portsmouth, NH, his brother Dudley and his wife Marge of Conway NH, and several nieces and nephews. He was a happy grandfather to Nicholas and Dylan Hall and Paul and Sophie Marick. A celebration of life will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Brewitt Funeral Home, 14 Pine St., Exeter. Friends and family may visit with the family from 1-2 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pease Greeters or the charity of one's choice.
